Federal Occupation Description

This series covers two-grade interval administrative positions that manage, supervise, lead, administer, develop, deliver, and support information technology (IT) systems and services. This series covers only those positions for which the paramount requirement is knowledge of IT principles, concepts, and methods; e.g., data storage, software applications, networking. Information technology refers to systems and services used in the automated acquisition, storage, manipulation, management, movement, control, display, switching, interchange, transmission, assurance, or reception of information. Information technology includes computers, network components, peripheral equipment, software, firmware, services, and related resources. This series covers, but is not limited to, the following specialties: Policy and Planning - Work that involves a wide range of IT management activities that typically extend and apply to an entire organization or major components of an organization. This includes strategic planning, capital planning and investment control, workforce planning, policy and standards development, resource management, knowledge management, architecture and infrastructure planning and management, auditing, and information security management. Enterprise Architecture - Work that involves the analysis, planning, design, implementation, documentation, assessment, and management of the enterprise structural framework to align IT strategy, plans, and systems with the mission, goals, structure, and processes of the organization. Security - Work that involves ensuring the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of systems, networks, and data through the planning, analysis, development, implementation, maintenance, and enhancement of information systems security programs, policies, procedures, and tools. Systems Analysis - Work that involves applying analytical processes to the planning, design, and implementation of new and improved information systems to meet the business requirements of customer organizations. Applications Software - Work that involves the design, documentation, development, modification, testing, installation, implementation, and support of new or existing applications software. Operating Systems - Work that involves the planning, installation, configuration, testing, implementation, and management of the systems environment in support of the organization's IT architecture and business needs. Network Services - Work that involves the planning, analysis, design, development, testing, quality assurance, configuration, installation, implementation, integration, maintenance, and/or management of networked systems used for the transmission of information in voice, data, and/or video formats. Data Management - Work that involves the planning, development, implementation, and administration of systems for the acquisition, storage, and retrieval of data. Internet - Work that involves the technical planning, design, development, testing, implementation, and management of Internet, intranet, and extranet activities, including systems/applications development and technical management of Web sites. This specialty only includes positions requiring the application of technical knowledge of Internet systems, services, and technologies. Systems Administration - Work that involves planning and coordinating the installation, testing, operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of hardware and software systems. Customer Support - Work that involves the planning and delivery of customer support services, including installation, configuration, troubleshooting, customer assistance, and/or training, in response to customer requirements.

The CompTIA A+ ce certification demonstrates competency as a computer support technician. The A+ ce certification is appropriate for entry-level technicians who perform tasks such as installation, configuration, diagnosing, preventive maintenance and basic networking. Security, safety and environmental issues, and communication and professionalism are also covered. It is recommended, although not required, that candidates have nine to twelve months of related hands-on experience as an IT professional.

Project+ is a certification for individuals who have fundamental project management skills. Project+ covers the entire project life cycle from initiation and planning through execution, acceptance, support and closure. The certification demonstrates that project managers have the skills necessary to complete projects on time and within budget, and create a common project management language among project team members. Project+ is appropriate for any managerial position across occupations. Although there are no experience or education requirements that must be met prior to taking the exam, one year of managing, directing or participating in small- to medium-scale projects is recommended.

CompTIA Linux+ validates the skills of IT professionals with hands-on experience configuring, monitoring, and supporting servers running the Linux operating system. The new exam has an increased focus on the following topics: security, kernel modules, storage & visualization, device management at an enterprise level, git & automation, networking & firewalls, server side & command line, server (vs. client-based) coverage, troubleshooting and SELinux. Candidates are recommended to hold the CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+ and have 12 months of Linux admin experience.

Network+ ce is an intermediate skill level certification for IT technicians who can describe the features and functions of networking components and manage, maintain, troubleshoot, install, operate and configure basic network infrastructure. In addition, certification holders have a basic understanding of enterprise technologies, including cloud and virtualization technologies. Network+ ce is appropriate for computer network technicians, engineers, analysts and administrators. Although not a prerequisite, it is recommended that CompTIA Network+ ce candidates have at least nine months of experience in network support or administration or academic training, along with a CompTIA A+ ce certification.

CompTIA Server+ is an intermediate skill level certification for IT technical support professionals that certifies the technical knowledge and skills required to build, maintain, troubleshoot and support server hardware and software technologies. The certification focuses on server-specific hardware and operating systems as well as virtualization, disaster recovery and security procedures. Although not a prerequisite, it is recommended that CompTIA Server+ candidates hold a CompTIA A+ certification and has 18-24 months of IT experience.

The CCDA certification is appropriate for Information Technology occupations such as network design engineers, system engineers, and sales engineers. The Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) is an advanced skill level certification for experienced professionals in the computer security field who are responsible for developing the information security policies, standards, and procedures and managing their implementation across an organization. To be eligible for CISSP, candidates must have five years of information security experience in at least two of the exam domain areas including security and risk management, asset security, security engineering, communications and network security, identity and access management, security assessment and testing, security operations, and software development security.

The Certified Linux Administrator (LPIC-1) is the first certification in Linus Professional Insitute's multi-level Linux Professional certification program. The LPIC-1 validates a candidate's ability to perform maintenance tasks with the command line, install & configure a computer running Linux and be able to configure basic networking. To obtain the LPIC-1 certification, a candidate must pass two exams in which the candidate should be able to work at the Linux command line, perform easy maintenance tasks (help out users, add users to a larger system, backup and restore, shutdown and reboot), and install and configure a workstation (including X) and connect it to a LAN, or a stand-alone PC via modem to the Internet. There are no experience or education requirements that must be met prior to taking the exam(s). This certification is appropriate for any IT professional using the Linux operating system and its associated tools.

The GIAC Information Security Professional (GISP) certification is an intermediate level credential for security professionals that want to fill the gaps in their understanding of technical information security; System, Security, and Network Administrators that want to understand the pragmatic applications of the Common Body of Knowledge; managers that want to understand information security beyond simple terminology and concepts; anyone new to information security with some background in information systems and networking. Candidates may also wish to use this certification as an independent assessment of mastery of the (ISC)2 Common Body of Knowledge. There are no pre-requisites for this certification.

The GIAC Security Expert (GSE) is an advanced skill level certification for top security consultants and practitioners that is targeted to those pursuing an in-depth technical education in all areas of information security. Knowledge in a particular area, Intrusion Detection or Incident Handling is both important and valuable. The GSE exam has two parts: a multiple-choice paper exam and a hands-on, performed based lab exam. Before a candidate can attempt the GSE, they must successfully complete three GIAC certifications with at least one Gold designation. There are multiple combinations of prerequisite GIAC certification that will meet the eligibility requirements. In addition, candidates must have real world, hands on experience in relevent subject areas.

The GIAC Security Essentials Certification (GSEC) is an entry level security certification created to provide assurance that a certified individual holds the appropriate level of knowledge and skill necessary for anyone with hands on technical responsibilities in the key or essential areas of information security. The certification is targeted toward IT security professionals that want to demonstrate they are qualified for IT systems hands-on roles with respect to security tasks. Candidates are required to demonstrate an understanding of information security beyond simple terminology and concepts. There are no prerequisites for the GSEC certification.

The Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP) is an intermediate skill level certification for individuals involved in network and systems security administration who are responsible for developing the information security policies, standards, and procedures and managing their implementation across various hardware and software programs in their organization. The SSCP is targeted toward those working towards positions such as Network Security Engineers, Security Systems Analysts, or Security Administrators. It is also appropriate for personnel in other non-security disciplines that require an understanding of security but do not have information security as a primary part of their job description, including information systems auditors; application programmers; system, network and database administrators; business unit representatives, and systems analysts. Candidates must have at least one year of systems security-related work experience.

Security+ ce is an introductory level certification that proves competency in system security, network infrastructure, access control, assessments and audits, cryptography and organizational security. Although not a prerequisite, it is recommended that CompTIA Security+ ce candidates have at least two years of technical networking experience, with an emphasis on security. CISM focuses on information risk management as the basis of information security. This certification is targeted toward experienced information security managers and those who have information security management responsibilities. Five or more years of information security work experience, with a minimum of three years of information security management work experience is required.

GISF candidates will be able to demonstrate key concepts of information security including understanding the threats and risks to information and information resources, identifying best practices that can be used to protect them, and learning to diversify our protection strategy. The Information Systems Security Management Professional (CISSP-ISSMP) is an advanced skill level information security certification that is a concentration of the CISSP certification. This concentration contains deeper managerial elements such as project management, risk management, setting up and delivering a security awareness program, and managing a Business Continuity Planning program. A CISSP-ISSMP establishes, presents, and governs information security policies and procedures that are supportive to overall business goals. Typically, the CISSP-ISSMP certification holder or candidate will be responsible for constructing the framework of the information security department and define the means of supporting the group internally. Candidates must have two years of experience in information security management and hold the CISSP certification.

The Information Systems Security Architecture Professional (CISSP-ISSAP) is an advanced skill level information security certification that is a concentration of the CISSP certification. The architect plays a key role within the information security department with responsibilities that functionally fit between the C-suite and upper managerial level and the implementation of the security program. He/she would generally develop, design, or analyze the overall security plan. Although this role may typically be tied closely to technology this is not necessarily the case, and is fundamentally the consultative and analytical process of information security. The CISSP-ISSAP is an appropriate credential for Chief Security Architects and Analysts. Candidates must have two years experience in systems security architecture and hold the CISSP certification.

The ITIL Foundation Certificate is the entry level certification which offers applicants a general awareness of the key elements, concepts, and terminology used in the ITIL service lifecycle, including the links between lifecycle stages, the processes used, and their contribution to service management practice. This certification is appropriate for those who require a basic understanding or the ITIL framework, those who need understanding of how ITIL can be used to enhance IT service management within an organization, and IT professionals who are working within an organization that has adopted and adapted ITIL who need to be informed about and thereafter contribute to an ongoing service improvement program. The Foundation examination tests candidates in their ability to understand the basic concepts of ITIL, describe them, and demonstrate basic comprehension of the ITIL practices. This certification is appropriate for IT service managers or those responsible for support, delivery and management of critical IT services and systems. There are no experience or education requirements that must be met prior to taking the exam.

Cisco Systems, Inc., Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician (CCENT) validates the ability to install, operate and troubleshoot a small enterprise branch network, including basic network security. With a CCENT, a network professional demonstrates the skills required for entry-level network support positions - the starting point for many successful careers in networking. This includes networking fundamentals, WAN technologies, basic security and wireless concepts, routing and switching fundamentals, and configuring simple networks. The CCENT certification is appropriate for IT occupations including network and computer support technicians. There are no experience or education requirements that must be met prior to taking the exam.

The EC Council Certified Security Analyst (CSA) is an advanced ethical hacking certification for individuals who wish to demonstrate expertise in computer security by exploring the analytical phase of ethical hacking. This certification complements the Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) certification and is a prerequisite for the Licensed Penetration Tester (LPT) designation. The CSA certification explores how to analyze the outcome of the tools and techniques used in ethical hacking to identify and mitigate risks to the information security of the infrastructure. The CSA is appropriate for security officers, auditors, security professionals, site administrators, and others who may be concerned about the integrity of their organizations network infrastructure. Candidates are not required to attend training courses, but those who do not must submit an Eligibility Application Form and obtain authorization from EC-Council before attempting the exam.

The Certified Authorization Professional (CAP) is a certification for individuals involved in the process of certifying and accrediting the security of information systems. Specifically, the credential applies to professionals responsible for formalizing processes used to assess risk and establish security requirements, as well as ensure information systems possess security commensurate with the level of exposure to potential risk. Candidates must have two years of experience in any of the following areas: IT security, information assurance, information risk management, certification, system testing and continuous monitoring, systems administration, information security policy, database/systems development, or technical or auditing experience.

The Cisco CCNA Security curriculum emphasizes core security technologies, the installation, troubleshooting and monitoring of network devices to maintain integrity, confidentiality and availability of data and devices, and competency in the technologies that Cisco uses in its security structure. CCNA Security is targeted towards job roles such as Network Security Specialist, Security Administrator, or Network Security Support Engineer. There are no formal education or experience requirements, however candidates must hold a valid CCENT, CCNA Routing and Switching, or any CCIE certification to be eligible for the CCNA Security certification.

Cisco Systems, Inc., Cisco Certified Design Expert (CCDE) is for expert-level network design engineers, expert-level network leads of IT infrastructure teams, and expert-level network leads of architecture teams working in job roles that require them to translate business needs, budget, and operational constraints into the design of a converged solution. There are no formal prerequisites for CCDE certification. Candidates are recommended to have at least 7 years of experience in Network Engineering or Advanced Network Design. Candidates must pass a 2-hour written qualification exam and an 8-hour practical exam. The written exam covers the topics of network design in the areas of routing, tunneling, Quality of Service (QoS), management cost, capacity, and security. The practical exam tests the candidate's ability to perform design analysis, justify design requirements, and develop a design implementation based on best practices. Only candidates that have a passing score on the CCDE Written Exam may register for the CCDE Practical Exam.

The Cisco Certified Network Professional Security (CCNP Security) is a mid-level certification that validates the ability to plan, implement, verify and troubleshoot local and wide-area enterprise networks and work collaboratively with specialists on advanced security, voice, wireless and video solutions. CCNP Security is aligned to the job role of a Cisco Network Security Engineer responsible for security in routers, switches, networking devices and appliances, as well as choosing, deploying, supporting and troubleshooting firewalls, VPNS, and IDS/IPS solutions. Candidates must have a valid CCNA Security certification, or any CCIE Certification to be eligible for CCNP Security, and must successfully pass four examinations.

CSSLP is for everyone involved in the Software Lifecycle with at least 4 years of experience.

The CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP) ce certification is targeted to individuals with advanced-level security skills and knowledge. The CASP ce exam is designed to verify an applicant’s knowledge and skill in the areas of enterprise security, risk management, research and analysis, and the integration of computing, communications, and business disciplines. Although there are no required pre-requisites, the CASP ce certification is intended to follow the CompTIA Security+ ce certification as the next step in security certifications. A minimum of 10 years of experience in IT administration with at least 5 years in hands-on technical security experience is recommended.

Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA): Windows Server 2012 is a foundation level certification that validates an individual's mastery of the primary set of Windows Server 2012 skills required to reduce IT costs and deliver more business value. Earning an MCSA: Windows Server 2012 certification qualifies an individual for a position as a network of computer systems administrator or as a computer network specialist. Candidates must pass three exams related to installing, configuring, and administering Windows Server 2012. There are no experience or educational requirements that must be met prior to taking the exams, however, it is recommended that candidates have at least one year of experience implementing and administering Windows Server 2012.

The Global Information Assurance Certification (GIAC), Certified Project Manager Certification (GCPM) is a mid-level certification designed for security professionals, project leads, and managers. The certification is an expert-level certification that ensures candidates gain knowledge and experience in collaboration solutions integration and interoperation, configuration, and troubleshooting in complex networks and the challenges of video, mobility, and presence as the foundation for workplace collaboration solutions. There are no formal prerequisites for CCIE certification. Other professional certifications or training courses are not required. Candidates must first pass a written qualification exam and then the corresponding hands-on lab exam. Candidates are expected to have an in-depth understanding of the topics on the exams and strongly encouraged to have three to five years of job experience before attempting certification.

The Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) Cyber Ops certification is an entry-level certification in the area of cybersecurity. With a focus on basic security principles and concepts, the certifcation is targeted towards associate-level cybersecurity analysts within security operations centers. To earn the CCNA Cyber Ops certifcation, candidates must pass two written exams requiring knowledge in the area of network and security concepts, security monitoring and analysis, and incident response and handling.  Although there are no formal pre-requisities, candidates should have a basic knowledge of computer operating systems and one to three years of experience.

The International Council of Electronic Commerce Consultants (EC-Council), Certified Network Defender (CND) certification program focuses on creating Network Administrators who are trained on protecting, detecting and responding to the threats on the network. Network administrators are usually familiar with network components, traffic, performance and utilization, network topology, location of each system, security policy, etc. A CND will get the fundamental understanding of the true construct of data transfer, network technologies, software technologies so that the they understand how networks operate, understand what software is automating and how to analyze the subject material. Candidates must attend official training or have at least 2 years of work experience in the Information Security domain to qualify to sit for the CND exam.
