This standard is used to grade nonsupervisory work involved in the maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, and related fixtures and utilities, requiring the use of a variety of trade practices associated with occupations such as carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, air conditioning, cement work, painting, and other related trades.

The responsibilities of the Mechanical Plans Examiner include but are not limited to the review of mechanical drawings, specifications, and other documentation provided by the design professional for compliance with the codes and standards adopted by their jurisdiction. The Plans Examiner provides customer services by answering questions and concerns related to mechanical codes and standards. Plan reviews are documented and indicate deficiencies that must be corrected or that the submitted design is available for permitting. Corrections or changes to the permit drawings are reviewed to verify the submitted documentation does not change the original design and complies with the adopted codes and standards. Applicants need to pass a written Mechanical Plans Examiner 50 multiple-choice questions test.

Renewal Period: 3 years

The International Code Council (ICC) Commercial Mechanical Inspector certification validates an individual's technical knowledge, education and related experience as an inspector. The certification holder demonstrates the ability to inspect the new installation or replacement of electrical, plumbing, mechanical and related systems in new and existing buildings and sites, and has a strong knowledge of building, international mechanical, and fuel gas codes. The certified individual will show a confirmed commitment to public safety and an understanding of factors such as heating and cooling systems, water heaters, exhaust systems, duct systems, combustion air, vents and fuel supply and how it applies to code regulations when conducting inspections. There are no experience requirements, education requirements, or pre-requisites that must be met prior to taking the written exam. However, individuals seeking the Commercial Mechanical Inspector certification should have technical knowledge and related experience in their chosen field of expertise. Candidates are required to pass a multiple-choice written exam with at least a 75%.

Renewal Period: 3 years

The International Code Council (ICC) Commercial Plumbing Inspector certification validates an individual's basic technical knowledge, education and related experience as an inspector. The certification holder demonstrates the ability to conduct inspections of plumbing systems to ensure they are safe and legal and has a strong knowledge of building and plumbing codes. The individual will have an understanding of factors such as: Fixtures, Water Heaters, Water Supply and Distribution, Sanitary and Storm Drainage, Vents, Interceptors, Separators, and Special Piping as it applies to code compliance when conducting inspections. There are no experience requirements, education requirements, or pre-requisites that must be met prior to taking the written exam. However, individuals seeking the Commercial Plumbing Inspector certification should have technical knowledge and related experience in their chosen field of expertise. Candidates are required to pass a multiple-choice written exam with at least a 75%.

The Building Performance Institute, Inc. (BPI) Building Analyst Professional certification is intended for those individuals who conduct building performance audits, including measurement and verification services with related building analysis. Individuals may also specify, sell, coordinate and/or install certain building performance work. BPI strongly recommends that a candidate seek training and have some experience in the building performance industry before attempting any BPI certification designations. There are no training, education, or experience requirements to sit for the exams. Candidates must pass a written exam and a field exam.

The Building Performance Institute, Inc. (BPI) Crew Leader Certification is for individuals who ensure quality and supervise the installation and performance of weatherization measures defined in each project's work scope developed during the auditing/estimating process. a crew leader is a residential energy efficiency professional who is responsible for supervising the retrofitting activities specified in the scope of work. Candidates must have a minimum of a high school diploma; OSHA 30 certification; 4,000 hours of industry specific experience; 100 hours of building science coursework; and a minimum of 15 points accumulated from experience, coursework/training, and/or certifications. Candidates must complete a multiple choice exam and a practicum evaluation.

The Building Performance Institute, Inc. (BPI) Energy Auditor Certification is for individuals who evaluate the energy efficiency, health, and safety of a home, and use diagnostic equipment to identify areas for energy savings. Energy Auditors use modeling software to produce an audit report and develop a prioritized scope of work for the customer. Earning the EA automatically earns Building Analyst certification as well. Candidates receive two certifications. Candidates must have a minimum of a high school diploma or GED; a minimum of 1,000 hours of relevant experience in a specified role; have completed 15 comprehensive whole house audits; and have obtained a minimum of 20 points from a combination of specified activities. Candidates must complete a multiple choice exam and a practicum evaluation.

The Building Performance Institute, Inc. (BPI) Quality Control Inspector Certification is for individuals who verify compliance of retrofit work performed based on work plans and standards. Use diagnostic equipment to conduct audits and inspections, and develop reports that specify corrective actions to achieve optimal whole house home performance. Candidates must obtain a minimum of 40 points from a combination of specified activities which include experience, training, and industry certifications. Candidates must complete a multiple choice exam and a practicum evaluation.

Building Performance Institute, Inc (BPI) Retrofit Installer Technician certification is for individuals who ensure proper installation of products and services related to existing home energy efficiency. Install residential envelope air sealing, HV/AC duct sealing, insulation, windows and doors, mechanical ventilation and roofing upgrades in single family homes and small multi-family housing. Candidates must have a minimum of a high school diploma or GED and 35 points from a combination of activities or 50 points if candidate does not have a high school diploma or GED. Candidates must complete a multiple choice exam and a practicum evaluation.
