The Building Performance Institute, Inc. (BPI) Envelope Professional certification is intended for those individuals who optimize the installation, operation and maintenance, as well as, measure and verify the performance of envelope systems and address their interaction with other building systems from a building science perspective. BPI strongly recommends that a candidate seek training and have some experience in the building performance industry before attempting any BPI certification designations. There are no training, education, or experience requirements to sit for the exams. Candidates must pass a written exam and a field exam.

RECERTIFICATION

Envelope Professional

Renewal Period: 3 years

The Envelope Professional credential has the following recertification information:

  • Individuals who have earned 0-9 CEUs must successfully complete a 100-question online exam for the first designation and a 50-question online exam for each additional designation. Individuals who have earned 10-29 CEUs must successfully complete a 50-question online exam for each designation. Individuals who have earned 30 or more CEUs are not required to take the written exam.
  • Individuals renewing at the 3 and 6 year interval and who wish to bypass the field exam requirement must have proof of a minimum of 3,000 hours of relevant experience within the past three (3) years related to the designation being renewed. Individuals who do not have proof of experience must retake the field exam. Individuals renewing at the 9 year interval or thereafter are not required to retake the field exam.

Additional considerations for the Envelope Professional include:

  • While no formal experience is necessary to participate in most exams, BPI strongly recommends that candidates seek training from an independent training organization and have some experience in the building performance industry before attempting any BPI certification designations.
