The Building Performance Institute, Inc. (BPI) Energy Auditor Certification is for individuals who evaluate the energy efficiency, health, and safety of a home, and use diagnostic equipment to identify areas for energy savings. Energy Auditors use modeling software to produce an audit report and develop a prioritized scope of work for the customer. Earning the EA automatically earns Building Analyst certification as well. Candidates receive two certifications. Candidates must have a minimum of a high school diploma or GED; a minimum of 1,000 hours of relevant experience in a specified role; have completed 15 comprehensive whole house audits; and have obtained a minimum of 20 points from a combination of specified activities. Candidates must complete a multiple choice exam and a practicum evaluation.

Education REQUIREMENTS
Candidate must have a GED/high school diploma or equivalent education from another country.
Experience REQUIREMENTS
Candidate must have a minimum of 1,000 hours of relevant experience, during which the candidate has accomplished one or more of the following roles:
- Be a crew lead in a weatherization (WAP) trade or related field, OR
- Be in a building science trade performing audits under the supervision of an auditor, OR
- Be an energy auditor
Other REQUIREMENTS
The Energy Auditor Certification credential has the following other requirements:
- Candidate must have completed (with proof) 15 comprehensive whole house audits, such as home performance, WAP RESNET, BPI, etc.

Candidate must obtain a minimum of 20 points from any combination of activities below:
- Building Experience (framing, roofing, drywall, siding, etc) maximum of 10 points
- 5 points for each 1,000 hours
- Training from industry specific training center (training whose content can be matched against and lines up with the content of the job task analysis for the certification); maximum of 10 points
- 5 points for every 40 hours
- Industry certifications (RESNET, BPI, NATE, EPA). Other certifications also considered; maximum of 10 points
- 5 points per certification
- Building Experience (framing, roofing, drywall, siding, etc) maximum of 10 points
