The Fire Department Safety Officers Association (FDSOA) Health and Safety Officer (HSO) is an entry-level certification designed for individuals sponsored by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) or an Emergency Service Organization and individuals meeting the administrative duties and requirements of a Health and Safety Officer. Candidates must meet the NFPA current standards and supply confirmation from the fire department's chief that they meet the standards.

Experience REQUIREMENTS
FDSOA requires that applicants complete six (6) of the Skills Sheets, along with the written exam. FDSOA requires that an applicant's Affidavit is received and on-file. The applicant only needs to return the Affidavit to FDSOA once a Chief Officer has signed off on the skills sheets; there are 11 skills sheets for HSO, but applicants only need to prove completion of six (6).
Other REQUIREMENTS
The Health and Safety Officer (HSO) credential has the following other requirements:
- Applicants must meet the experience-related requirements detailed in the NFPA 1521 - 2015 Standard for Department Safety Officer Professional Qualifications, Chapter 4, Section 4.5.1. (Free access to the standard requires providing an email address/user name and password.) An employer validates this experience on the application form.
