Building Performance Institute, Inc (BPI) Retrofit Installer Technician certification is for individuals who ensure proper installation of products and services related to existing home energy efficiency. Install residential envelope air sealing, HV/AC duct sealing, insulation, windows and doors, mechanical ventilation and roofing upgrades in single family homes and small multi-family housing. Candidates must have a minimum of a high school diploma or GED and 35 points from a combination of activities or 50 points if candidate does not have a high school diploma or GED. Candidates must complete a multiple choice exam and a practicum evaluation.

Candidates must have a GED/high school diploma OR equivalent education from another country OR state career readiness certificate (with a minimum score of 3 in each work key) OR obtain additional points explained below.

The Retrofit Installer Technician credential has the following other requirements:

  • Candidates who have have a GED/high school diploma or equivalent from another country OR a state career readiness certificate must obtain a minimum of 35 points from any combination of activities below.
  • Candidates who do not have a GED/high school diploma or equivalent from another country OR a state career readiness certificate must obtain a minimum of 50 points from any combination of activities below.
  • Eligible activities are:
    • Industry specific experience (in energy efficiency & renewable energy) (installing windows, doors, heating systems, insulation, air sealing, etc); maximum of 30 points
      • 10 points for each 500 hours
    • Building experience (framing, roofing, drywall, siding, etc); maximum of 10 points
      • 5 points for each 1,000 hours
    • Training from industry specific training center (training whose content can be matched against and lines up with the content of the job task analysis for the certification); maximum of 10 points
      • 5 points for every 16 hours
    • Industry certifications (RESNET, BPI, NATE, EPA). Other certifications also considered; maximum of 10 points
      • 5 points per certification

RECERTIFICATION

Retrofit Installer Technician

Renewal Period: 3 years

The Retrofit Installer Technician credential has the following recertification information:

  • In order to be eligible for recertification, candidates must have accumulated a minimum of 30 continuing education units (CEUs) over the three years of certification. When the minimum CEU requirement is met the candidate must successfully complete the field examinations that are current at the time of renewal. 

    Retrofit Installer Technician candidates who do not meet the CEU requirements must retake the written and field exam that is current at the time of renewal.
