The Building Performance Institute, Inc. (BPI) Quality Control Inspector Certification is for individuals who verify compliance of retrofit work performed based on work plans and standards. Use diagnostic equipment to conduct audits and inspections, and develop reports that specify corrective actions to achieve optimal whole house home performance. Candidates must obtain a minimum of 40 points from a combination of specified activities which include experience, training, and industry certifications. Candidates must complete a multiple choice exam and a practicum evaluation.

Other REQUIREMENTS

The Quality Control Inspector Certification credential has the following other requirements:

  • Candidates must obtain a minimum of 40 points from any combination of activities below:
    • Industry inspector specific experience (site visits, inspections, diagnostics, etc); maximum of 20 points
      • 10 points for 1,000 hours
    • Other industry specific experience (crew leader / energy auditor) minimum 2,000 hours in either activity
      • 5 points for crew leader
      • 10 points for energy auditor completing a minimum of 15 audits (proof required)
    • Building experience (framing, roofing, drywall, siding, etc); maximum of 10 points
      • 5 points for each 1,000 hours
    • Training from industry specific training center (training whose content can be matched against and lines up with the content of the job task analysis for the certification); maximum of 10 points
      • 5 points for every 40 hours
    • Industry certifications (RESNET, BPI, NATE, EPA). Other certifications also considered; maximum of 10 points
      • 5 points per certification

    • Conduct health and safety tests
    • Conduct diagnostic tests

  • Ensuring Worker Professionalism
    • Perform spot checks
    • Provide feedback regarding professionalism
  • Ensuring Program or Project Compliance
    • Maintain professional credentials
    • Confirm the allocation of public/private funds
    • Evaluate installed measures against the field guide, Standard Work Specifications (SWS) and state/local codes

RECERTIFICATION

Quality Control Inspector Certification

Renewal Period: 3 years

The Quality Control Inspector Certification credential has the following recertification information:

  • In order to be eligible for recertification, candidates must have accumulated a minimum of 24 continuing education units (CEUs) over the three years of certification. When the minimum CEU requirement is met the candidate must successfully complete the field examinations that are current at the time of renewal. 

    Quality Control Inspector candidates who do not meet the CEU requirements must retake the written and field exam that is current at the time of renewal.

    All Quality Control Inspector candidates must re-attest to the Code of Ethics located in the Quality Control Inspector Certification Scheme Handbook (appendix B) to be eligible for recertification.
