The International Code Council (ICC), Residential Building Inspector - B1 is an intermediate-level certification designed for professionals who perform residential building inspections. Residential Building Inspectors are responsible for performing inspections of structures to determine compliance with various building codes and standards adopted by his/her jurisdiction. At this level of certification, the Inspector must be able to inspect one-and-two family dwellings, townhomes not more than three stories in height, and accessory structures.

- ICC examinations are open to all individuals with no prerequisite for experience or education. ICC certification should be used as one of several measures of an individual's qualifications when screening applicants for a position. Inspectors should possess a combination of technical knowledge, education, and related experience.
Successfully passing this exam in combination with other specific exams and requirements may allow a candidate to obtain a combination designation. A combination designation is granted automatically through a candidate's myICC account once all prerequisites are met and all exams have been passed.
