The International Code Council (ICC) Certified Permit Technician certification validates an individual's basic technical knowledge, education and related experience as a permit technician. The certification holder demonstrates the ability to read blue prints, has knowledge of building codes, and understands zoning issues and legalities of code administration as it applies to general code compliance when applying for permits and inspections. There are no experience requirements, education requirements, or pre-requisites that must be met prior to taking the written exam. However, candidates seeking the permit technician certification should have technical knowledge and related experience in their chosen field of expertise. Candidates are required to pass a multiple-choice written exam with at least a 75%.

ICC develops and administers customized construction trade licensing exams for state and municipal jurisdictions.
