Professional Engineer License. As a P.E., you would be able to perform certain tasks, such as stamp and seal designs, bid for government contracts, be principal of a firm, perform consulting services, and offer services to the public. While each state licensing board has its own laws regarding engineering licensure, there is a general four-step process for licensure candidates: earn a degree from an ABET-accredited engineering program; pass the FE exam; gain acceptable work experience (typically a minimum of four years); and pass the PE exam in the appropriate discipline. The PE exam tests your ability to practice competently in a particular engineering discipline. It is designed for engineers who have gained at least four years# post-college work experience in their chosen engineering discipline. The American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT), ASNT Central Certification Program (ACCP) Professional Level III - Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) candidates should have the skills and knowledge to establish techniques, interpret codes, standards, and specifications, designate the particular technique to be used, and to prepare or approve procedures and instructions. An ACCP Professional Level III should also have general familiarity with other NDT methods. Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) uses one or more magnetic fields to locate surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials. The magnetic field can be applied with a permanent magnet or an electromagnet. When using an electromagnet, the field is present only when the current is being applied. When the magnetic field encounters a discontinuity transverse to the direction of the magnetic field, the flux lines produce a magnetic flux leakage field of their own. Candidates must have a minimum of 4 years of experience in an assignment at least comparable to that of a Level II in the applicable NDT method(s). ASNT Central Certification Program Professional Level III certification candidates are required to pass Basic, Method, Procedure Preparation, and Practical examinations.

The American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT), ASNT Central Certification Program (ACCP) Professional Level III - Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT) should have the skills and knowledge to establish techniques, interpret codes, standards, and specifications, designate the particular technique to be used, and to prepare or approve procedures and instructions. An ACCP Professional Level III should also have general familiarity with other NDT methods. Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT) is used to reveal surface discontinuities and makes it easier to detect flaws than an unaided visual inspection. Liquid penetrant testing is one of the most widely used NDT methods. Its popularity can be attributed to two main factors: its relative ease of use and its flexibility. It can be used to inspect almost any material provided that its surface is not extremely rough or porous. Materials that are commonly inspected using this method include; metals, glass, many ceramic materials, rubber and plastics. Candidates must have a minimum of 4 years of experience in an assignment at least comparable to that of a Level II in the applicable NDT method(s). ASNT Central Certification Program Professional Level III certification candidates are required to pass Basic, Method, Procedure Preparation, and Practical examinations.

Industrial radiography involves exposing a test object to penetrating radiation so that the radiation passes through the object being inspected and a recording medium placed against the opposite side of that object. For thinner or less dense materials such as aluminum, electrically generated x-radiation (X-rays) are commonly used, and for thicker or denser materials, gamma radiation is generally used. Candidates must have a minimum of 4 years of experience in an assignment at least comparable to that of a Level II in the applicable NDT method(s). ASNT Central Certification Program Professional Level III certification candidates are required to pass Basic, Method, Procedure Preparation, and Practical examinations.

The American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT), ASNT Central Certification Program (ACCP) Professional Level III - Ultrasonic Testing (UT) candidates should have the skills and knowledge to establish techniques, interpret codes, standards, and specifications, designate the particular technique to be used, and to prepare or approve procedures and instructions. Ultrasonic testing (UT) uses the same principle as is used in naval SONAR and fish finders. Ultra-high frequency sound is introduced into the part being inspected and if the sound hits a material with a different acoustic impedance (density and acoustic velocity), some of the sound will reflect back to the sending unit and can be presented on a visual display. By knowing the speed of the sound through the part (the acoustic velocity) and the time required for the sound to return to the sending unit, the distance to the reflector (the indication with the different acoustic impedance) can be determined. Candidates must have a minimum of 4 years of experience in an assignment at least comparable to that of a Level II in the applicable NDT method(s). ASNT Central Certification Program Professional Level III certification candidates are required to pass Basic, Method, Procedure Preparation, and Practical examinations.

Corrosion, misalignment of parts, physical damage and cracks are just some of the discontinuities that may be detected by visual examinations. Candidates must have a minimum of 4 years of experience in an assignment at least comparable to that of a Level II in the applicable NDT method(s). ASNT NDT Level III certification candidates are required to pass both the NDT Basic and a method examination in order to receive the ASNT NDT Level III certificate.

The ASNT NDT Level III program provides third-party certification for nondestructive testing (NDT) personnel whose specific jobs require knowledge of the technical principles underlying the nondestructive tests they perform, witness, monitor or evaluate. Electromagnetic testing is a general test category that includes Eddy Current testing, Alternating Current Field Measurement (ACFM), and Remote Field testing. While magnetic particle testing is also an electromagnetic test, due to its widespread use it is considered a stand-alone test method rather as than an electromagnetic testing technique. All of these techniques use the induction of an electric current or magnetic field into a conductive part, then the resulting effects are recorded and evaluated. Candidates must have a minimum of 4 years of experience in an assignment at least comparable to that of a Level II in Electromagnetic Testing. ASNT NDT Level III certification candidates are required to pass both the NDT Basic and a method examination in order to receive the ASNT NDT Level III certificate.

The ASNT NDT Level III program provides third-party certification for nondestructive testing (NDT) personnel whose specific jobs require knowledge of the technical principles underlying the nondestructive tests they perform, witness, monitor or evaluate. Infrared/Thermal Testing (IR), or infrared thermography, is used to measure or map surface temperatures based on the infrared radiation given off by an object as heat flows through, to or from that object. The majority of infrared radiation is longer in wavelength than visible light but can be detected using thermal imaging devices, commonly called "infrared cameras." Used properly, thermal imaging can be used to detect corrosion damage, delaminations, disbonds, voids, inclusions as well as many other detrimental conditions. Candidates must have a minimum of 4 years of experience in an assignment at least comparable to that of a Level II in Thermal/Infrared Testing. ASNT NDT Level III certification candidates are required to pass both the NDT Basic and a method examination in order to receive the ASNT NDT Level III certificate.

The ASNT NDT Level III program provides third-party certification for nondestructive testing (NDT) personnel whose specific jobs require knowledge of the technical principles underlying the nondestructive tests they perform, witness, monitor or evaluate. Neutron radiography (NR) uses an intense beam of low energy neutrons as a penetrating medium rather than the gamma- or x-radiation used in conventional radiography. Generated by linear accelerators, betatrons and other sources, neutrons penetrate most metallic materials, rendering them transparent, but are attenuated by most organic materials (including water, due to its high hydrogen content) which allows those materials to be seen within the component being inspected. When used with conventional radiography, both the structural and internal components of a test piece can be viewed. Candidates must have a minimum of 4 years of experience in an assignment at least comparable to that of a Level II in Neutron Radiographic Testing. ASNT NDT Level III certification candidates are required to pass both the NDT Basic and a method examination in order to receive the ASNT NDT Level III certificate.

Magnetic flux leakage (MFL) is a magnetic method of nondestructive testing that is used to detect corrosion and pitting in steel structures, most commonly pipelines and storage tanks. The basic principle is that a powerful magnet is used to magnetize the steel. Candidates must have a minimum of 4 years of experience in an assignment at least comparable to that of a Level II in Magnetic Flux Leakage. ASNT NDT Level III certification candidates are required to pass both the NDT Basic and a method examination in order to receive the ASNT NDT Level III certificate.
