American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT)

ASNT Central Certification Program (ACCP) Professional Level III - Ultrasonic Testing (UT)

Credential: ASNT Central Certification Program (ACCP) Professional Level III - Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
Credentialing Agency: American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT)

Renewal Period: 5 years

The American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT), ASNT Central Certification Program (ACCP) Professional Level III - Ultrasonic Testing (UT) candidates should have the skills and knowledge to establish techniques, interpret codes, standards, and specifications, designate the particular technique to be used, and to prepare or approve procedures and instructions. Ultrasonic testing (UT) uses the same principle as is used in naval SONAR and fish finders. Ultra-high frequency sound is introduced into the part being inspected and if the sound hits a material with a different acoustic impedance (density and acoustic velocity), some of the sound will reflect back to the sending unit and can be presented on a visual display. By knowing the speed of the sound through the part (the acoustic velocity) and the time required for the sound to return to the sending unit, the distance to the reflector (the indication with the different acoustic impedance) can be determined. Candidates must have a minimum of 4 years of experience in an assignment at least comparable to that of a Level II in the applicable NDT method(s). ASNT Central Certification Program Professional Level III certification candidates are required to pass Basic, Method, Procedure Preparation, and Practical examinations.

More information can be found on the certifying agency's website.

RECERTIFICATION

ASNT Central Certification Program (ACCP) Professional Level III - Ultrasonic Testing (UT)

Renewal Period: 5 years

The ASNT Central Certification Program (ACCP) Professional Level III - Ultrasonic Testing (UT) credential has the following recertification information:

  • The ACCP Level III program permits ACCP Level III certification holders to renew by "Points" at 5-year intervals. The "points" system requires that certification holders earn 25 points during their current 5-year certification period for NDT-related activities. See the point categories and structure.
  • Renewal by points without re-examination is permitted at the first 5-year interval after initial certification (or recertification) by examination. Renewal by examination is required 10-years after examination unless otherwise noted below. Renewal by examination may be done in lieu of renewal by points.

Additional considerations for the ASNT Central Certification Program (ACCP) Professional Level III - Ultrasonic Testing (UT) include:

  • For Professional Level III candidates with a currently valid ASNT NDT Level III certification in the applicable test method(s), the Basic and Method examination is waived.
  • If an examination is required for both Level II and Level III certification, those examination requirements are waived for Level III candidates that hold a currently valid ACCP Level II certification in the applicable test method.
