The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE), Broadband Premises Expert (BPE) certification is designed for experienced field technicians who can install and troubleshoot telecommunications services (video, voice, and data) at customers’ premises. Candidates should be able to install and troubleshoot a variety of triple-play installations, from easy to complex, as well as mentor and coach junior employees. The BPE certification is one of three stand-alone premises certifications. BPE candidates must pass a written exam.

    • Basics of analog signal and why the NTSC was developed.
    • Basics of digital signals.
    • Components and characteristics of fiber-optic cable used within the drop system and at the customer's premises.
    • Characteristics of cales and wire used within the drop system and at the customer's premises.
    • Differences and similarities between voice services provided by the cable operator and voice services provided by other operators.
    • Why competition has led to differences and similarities between cable operator-provided high-speed data (HSD) and other HSD services.
  • Premises Devices
    • Customer provided devices used to offer video, voice and data services at the customer's premises.
    • Why voice services provided by broadband providers are important.
    • Why HSD services provided by broadband providers are important.
    • Company-provided devices used to offer voice and data at the customer's premises.
  • Installation
    • Cable types, handling techniques, connectorization, and methods and procedures for installing coaxial drop cable used to provide service to the customer's premises.
    • Cable types, handling techniques, connectorization and splicing, and methods and procedures for installing optical fiber drop used to provide service to the customer's premises.
    • Wire types, handling techniques, termination, and methods and procedures for installing twisted pair wire used to provide service to the customer's premises.
    • Methods and procedures for inspecting an existing residential bond and for ensuring the bond meets industry standards.
    • Methods and procedures for installing video service at the customer's premises.
    • Methods and procedures for the installing voice service at the customer's premises.
    • Methods and procedures for installing high-speed data (HSD) service at the customer's premises.
    • Methods and procedures for installing passive and active devices used to provide video, voice and data service at the customer's premises.
  • Troubleshooting and Maintenance
    • Function use, care and maintenance of test equipment.
    • Best procedures for locating sources of degradation, and why they are optimum.
    • Procedures for troubleshooting common voice service problems at the customer's premises.
    • Various HSD problem symptoms, sources, and remedies--emphasizing isolating network, modem, and computer issues.
    • Troubleshoot analog and digital signal impairments.
    • DOCSIS tools used when troubleshooting video, voice and data service at the customer's premises.
    • Work force management tools used when troubleshooting voice and data service at the customer's premises.
    • Provisioning process.
  • Standards
    • Regulatory agencies and/or standards that govern practices for providing video, voice and data services at the customer's premises.
  • Safety
    • Industry standard safe work practices, for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and other job-related tools and equipment.
    • Industry standard safe work practices with respect to vehicle use.
    • Industry standard safe work practices with respect to work zone safety.
    • Industry standard safe work practices with respect to the work environment.
  • Coaching/Mentoring
    • Importance of effective communication with internal and external customers.
    • Why adults learn differently from each other.
    • Qualities of a positive role model.
    • Benefits, expectations and responsibilities of mentoring/coaching.

Broadband Premises Expert (BPE)

Renewal Period: 3 years

The Broadband Premises Expert (BPE) credential has the following recertification information:

  • The BPE certification is renewable every three years. BPE certification holders must earn 12 Recertification Units (RUs) to maintain certification without having to re-take the exam. Certification holders must also pay related fees.
