Federal Occupation Description

This standard is used to grade nonsupervisory work involved in installing, troubleshooting, adjusting, testing, modifying, calibrating, and repairing aircraft electrical systems and equipment on board conventional and non-conventional aircraft such as electrical power control and distribution systems, lighting systems, refueling and fuel quantity indicating systems, electrical warning, controlling, and actuating circuits, and tying-in power and control circuits for functional systems, such as hydraulics, armament, radar, engines, and fire suppression. The work is characterized by the need to understand the functional characteristics and relationships of various electrical systems and equipment on aircraft.

Candidates must hold the Associate Electronics Technician (CETa) certification prior to taking the RADAR exam. Individuals with a valid FCC Element 8, and either the ETA Associate CET (CETa) or a Journeyman (CET) certification, are eligible for a rollover to an ETA RADAR certification. The Certified Calibration Technician (CCT) tests, calibrates, maintains and repairs electrical, mechanical, electromechanical, analytical and electronic measuring, recording and indicating instruments and equipment for conformance to established standards. Candidate must have five years of on-the-job experience in one or more of the areas of the Certified Calibration Technician Body of Knowledge (If the candidate has completed a degree from a college, university, or technical school with accreditation accepted by ASQ, part of the five-year experience requirement will be waived). The Electronics Technicians Association, International (ETA-1), Line and Antenna Sweep (LAS) is a frequency domain reflectometer (FDR) certification. Requirements for the LAS certification include completion of a training course from an approved ETA-I school, hands-on testing and verification of line and antenna sweeping skills using modern FDR equipment, and a written exam. Basic knowledge of fundamental electronics and wireless communications is recommended. The LAS is a stand-alone certification but may be upgraded to a Journeyman CET by meeting additional requirements. Candidates must pass a written exam.

SpaceTEC, Certified Aerospace Technician Core is an entry-level certification that covers general knowledge in the areas of introduction to aerospace, applied mechanics, basic electricity, test and measurements, materials and processes, and aerospace safety. To earn the Certified Aerospace Technician Core certification, applicants must meet at least one of the eligibility criteria and pass both a written exam and a practical exam. Applicants who do not receive a satisfactory score on the written exam will also be required to pass an oral exam.

National Center for Aerospace & Transportation Technologies (NCATT), Aircraft Electronics Technician (AET) is NCATT's primary certification and is required for NCATT endorsements in the career field. AET certification recognizes the knowledge base of the advanced aerospace technician and promotes integrity, safety, and professionalism in the aerospace workforce. AET knowledge and skills include basic electronics facts, terminology, and principles, common maintenance practices, fundamentals of equipment maintenance, and aircraft fundamentals. There are no AET eligibility requirements. The AET written exam is open to all individuals regardless of career field, training, education or experience.

The General Communications Technician Level 2 certification is a journeyman level program modeled after wide-ranging industry communication systems encompassing more specific detailed items along with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) guidelines covering all the disciplines in the COMT program. The purpose of the GCT2 is to provide a certification program and that expands upon the coverage included in the GCT1 competencies. The GCT2 certification technician candidate must hold the GCT1 or the Associate CETa as the minimum pre-requisite certification. Prior RF experience is highly recommended.
