Federal Occupation Description

This standard is for grading nonsupervisory jobs involved in troubleshooting, testing, installing, repairing, overhauling, modifying, and maintaining electrical devices, equipment, and components such as automatic alternator synchronizing equipment, amplidyne control units, voltage regulating equipment, generators, actuators, switching and control panels, junction boxes, AC and DC motors, electrical harnesses, transformers, and power amplifiers. Typically, the equipment and components serviced have been removed from aircraft, ships, ground support or industrial equipment, tracked or wheeled heavy duty vehicles, missiles, etc. The work requires knowledge of electrical circuitry, formulas, and principles and their application to the devices, equipment, components, and systems repaired. In addition, some work may require knowledge of electronic circuitry and theory and general mechanical skills and knowledge.

Certified Electronics Technician - Journeyman-Level - Industrial. This is an entry-level certification exam. Technicians working in this field will have knowledge in the following areas; characteristics and applications of industrial electronics components, the operation of devices such as triacs, SCRs, diacs, and Shockley diodes. Also covered are various kinds of transducers, operation of transistors and op-amps, single-phase and three-phase control systems, motors, PLCs and industrial electronics safety and basic knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Applicants must pass a written exam.

The Electronics Technicians Association, International (ETA-I), Industrial Electronics Technician (IND) certification is an intermediate journeyman-level credential for electronics technicians. Candidates applying for the IND certification are expected to understand basic industrial electronics concepts applicable to various specialty areas of industrial electronics; Additionally, candidates must meet minimum experience requirements of at least two years working in the industry, this may include electronics training. IND candidates must be knowledgeable and have skills in the following areas: Amplifiers, Optical Wiring, Block Diagrams Schematics, Power Supplies, Test Equipment Tools, Mathematics, Computers Digital Concepts, Safety, Satellite Wireless Data, Communications, Cabling, Troubleshooting, Motors, Programmable Logic Controllers, and Software. Candidate must pass a written exam.

National Center for Aerospace & Transportation Technologies (NCATT), Aircraft Electronics Technician (AET) is NCATT's primary certification and is required for NCATT endorsements in the career field. AET certification recognizes the knowledge base of the advanced aerospace technician and promotes integrity, safety, and professionalism in the aerospace workforce. AET knowledge and skills include basic electronics facts, terminology, and principles, common maintenance practices, fundamentals of equipment maintenance, and aircraft fundamentals. There are no AET eligibility requirements. The AET written exam is open to all individuals regardless of career field, training, education or experience.

Certified Electronics Technician - Journeyman-Level - Consumer Electronics. This is an entry-level certification exam. The Residential Electronics Systems Integrator (RESI) is a professional certification for those who design and oversee the installation and integration of electronics systems in residences and light commercial buildings. The objective of the Integrator is to produce a residential or light commercial electronics systems package that will allow all data, control, and communication signals to be integrated at the premise controller and converged into one secure cohesive communication stream, to either be used within the premise or to be passed back and forth through the gateway. The Integrator should be proficient in the many protocols used over diverse media to communicate with and control residential and light commercial electronics systems.

The Electronics Technicians Association, International (ETA-I), Electric Vehicle Technician (EVT) is an intermediate-level credential for professionals who work on vehicles powered solely by electricity and perform routine maintenance. Electric Vehicle Technicians must have extensive knowledge of how lithium-ion batteries and automotive systems interact and how to replace hydraulically assisted systems with electric–powered systems, such as power-steering pumps or air-conditioning compressors, to improve fuel economy. Though ETA-I does not require any specific training, education or experience to earn the EVT certification, candidates are strongly encouraged to have the requisite knowledge and experience necessary to challenge the exam.
