Federal Occupation Description

This standard covers nonsupervisory work involved in installing, testing, repairing, and maintaining high voltage electric power-controlling equipment and/or distribution lines. The work requires knowledge of electrical principles, procedures, materials, and safety standards governing electrical systems above 600 volts. In addition, the work requires general mechanical skills and knowledge, and in some cases may require knowledge of electronic principles as they pertain to electronic control circuitry. In some situations, the work includes testing, repairing, and maintaining electric-generating equipment in co-generation facilities.

The Electronics Technicians Association, International (ETA-I), Fiber Optic Installers (FOI) certification is an intermediate-level credential for fiber optic technicians. The FOI exam focuses on a general understanding of optical fiber installation, connectorization, splicing, and testing; candidates for the FOI certification are expected to be familiar with optical fibers, connectors, and splice performance characteristics. Candidates must be proficient in the installation of connectors on various types of fiber optic cables using epoxies; additionally, FOI technicians perform mechanical and fusion splicing. Candidates must pass a written exam.

BICSI ITS Installer 1 certification test candidates on their ability to understand and apply a comprehensive collection of installation-specific information. There is no prior ITS industry installation experience requirement for individuals preparing to sit for the ITS Installer 1 exam. Participants sitting for the ITS Installer 1 exam must be able to distinguish between different colors and possess manual dexterity to complete fine motor tasks. The ITS Installer 1 exam is currently based on the content covered in the IN101, as well as the ITSIMM and is a two-part exam, hands-on and written. To become a BICSI ITS Installer 1, you must successfully pass both parts. Once you successfully pass both the hands-on and written exam, your credential will be valid for three full years from the date that you passed the last portion of the exam.

BICSI Technician certification test candidates on their ability to understand and apply a comprehensive collection of installation-specific information. Individuals preparing to sit for the ITS Technician exam must possess at least three years of current and verifiable ITS industry installation experience. Participants must also be able to distinguish between different colors and possess manual dexterity to complete fine motor tasks. The ITS Technician exam is currently based on the ITSIMM and is a two-part exam, hands-on and written. To become a BICSI ITS Technician, you must successfully pass both parts. If an individual does not hold both the ITS Copper and Optical Fiber Installer 2 credentials, the written exam will have an additional 30 questions.

The Electronics Technicians Association, International (ETA-I), Telecommunications Electronics Technician (TCM) is an intermediate-level technician credential for professionals who work in the telecommunications field. TCM candidates must have knowledge of wired and wireless communications basic concepts, which are then applicable to various types of voice, data and video systems. Telecommunications Electronics Technicians must be knowledgeable and have abilities in the following technical areas: Cables and Cabling, Analog Telephony, Equipment, Telecom Safety and Mathematics, Transmission Service Providers and Protocols, Distribution Methods, Computer, Digital Telephony, Interfacing, Internet, Network Infrastructures and Topologies, Office Wiring, Wireless Telephony, Test Equipment, Optical Wiring, and Troubleshooting. Candidates that hold a Standalone TCM and later complete the Associate CET (CETa), are eligible to upgrade to a Journeyman CET.

The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE), Broadband TelecomCenter Specialist (BTCS) certification is for individuals with knowledge in maintenance and troubleshooting of the inside plant facilities and of advanced entertainment, data and voice networks within the headend. Candidates must have a minimum of six to eight years of experience in cable television headend operations. Candidates must also pass a written exam.

The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE), Broadband Transport Specialist (BTS) is an advanced-level certification for technicians working in the cable telecommunications industry. BTSs are fiber maintenance and transport technicians. The BTS certification aims to identify competency in understanding and delivering signal transport; this includes network headend to hub, also from hub to optical node. BTS candidates are required to have knowledge of fiber optic and microwave system theory, cable system operations, modern telecom video, voice and data products and services, HFC network overview to include optical transport systems, and different cables, optical fibers, and cabling techniques. BTS candidates must pass a written exam.

The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE), Broadband Distribution Specialist (BDS) is an intermediate-level credential for technicians in the cable telecommunications industry for a cable provider, contractor or vendor. BDS candidates must have a minimum of five years of work experience in cable television network operations. Candidates must pass a written exam.

The International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians (ISCET), Certified Electronics Technician - Associate-Level is an entry-level certification. This certification validates the candidate's basic electronic knowledge for entry-level electronic professions. Certified Electronics Technician - Journeyman-Level - Industrial. This is an entry-level certification exam. Technicians working in this field will have knowledge in the following areas; characteristics and applications of industrial electronics components, the operation of devices such as triacs, SCRs, diacs, and Shockley diodes. Also covered are various kinds of transducers, operation of transistors and op-amps, single-phase and three-phase control systems, motors, PLCs and industrial electronics safety and basic knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Applicants must pass a written exam.

Certified Electronics Technician - Journeyman-Level - Radar. This is an entry-level certification exam. Technicians working in this field will have knowledge in the following areas; General knowledge of both pulse radar and continuous wave radar operation is necessary for taking this Journeyman option. This test covers transmitters and receivers, CRT display systems and their power supplies, antennas, transmission lines and their characteristics. Applicants must pass a written exam.

ISA's Certified Control Systems Technician Program (CCST) offers third-party recognition of technicians' knowledge and skills in automation and control. CCSTs calibrate, document, troubleshoot, and repair/replace instrumentation for systems that measure and control level, temperature, pressure, flow, and other process variables. CCST certifications are available at three levels, and each level requires the successful completion of an examination. The CCST examination is only one requirement for certification. The candidate must also meet minimum requirements comprised of work experience and education.

The Electronics Technicians Association, International (ETA-I), Data Cabling Installer (DCI) certification is a Journeyman-level credential recommended for individuals a basic level of installer experience and training. DCIs are expected to understand the basic installation and service concepts of copper cabling, which are applicable to all the procedures required to safely and competently install communications cabling. Candidates must pass an exam.

Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Technician certification requires candidates to provide record of six years or more of experience in EMC technician work. Graduation from an iNARTE-approved electronics technology curriculum of two years or U.S. Navy Class "A" school is considered equivalent to one year of required experience. Engineering teaching of a character satisfactory to iNARTE may be considered as a maximum of two years experience. Candidates must submit a minimum of one supervisory reference and two additional references each supporting character and competency as an EMC Technician, and must compose 10 original multiple choice questions with correct answers and supporting references. Certified Maintenance and Reliability Professionals (CMRP) is an entry-level certification. The Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional (CMRP) program is designed for certifying the knowledge, skills and experience of M&R professionals. It's more than just committing textbooks to memory; it's a thorough examination of individual expertise measured against a universal standard. It was developed to assess professionals' aptitude within the five (5) pillars of the Maintenance and Reliability Body of Knowledge: Business Management, Equipment Reliability, Manufacturing Process Reliability, Organization and Leadership, and Work Management. There are no educational or experiential requirements to sit for the exam.

The Certified Maintenance and Reliability Technician (CMRT) is an entry-level certification. CMRT will provide a non-biased, third-party, objective assessment and confirmation of the skills of your industrial maintenance mechanics. CMRT's are responsible for preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance. They perform troubleshooting and analysis, and apply sound maintenance practices in all aspects of their work. CMRTs are multi-skilled individuals whose expertise is primarily mechanical in nature as opposed to instrumentation or electrical. The CMRT exam tests competency and knowledge of specific tasks within four (4) domains: Maintenance Practices, Preventative and Predictive Maintenance, Troubleshooting and Analysis, and Corrective Maintenance. There are no specific education or experience requirements to sit for the exam.

The Electronics Technicians Association, International (ETA-1), Line and Antenna Sweep (LAS) is a frequency domain reflectometer (FDR) certification. Requirements for the LAS certification include completion of a training course from an approved ETA-I school, hands-on testing and verification of line and antenna sweeping skills using modern FDR equipment, and a written exam. Basic knowledge of fundamental electronics and wireless communications is recommended. The LAS is a stand-alone certification but may be upgraded to a Journeyman CET by meeting additional requirements. Candidates must pass a written exam.

The Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) Engineer is a mid-level certification that is appropriate for engineers and technicians whose training and experience have primarily focused on problems, engineering design and corrective measures associated with minimizing or eliminating electrostatic discharge. Candidates must provide specific record of nine years or more of experience in engineering work. Graduation from an iNARTE-approved engineering curriculum of four years shall be considered equivalent to four years of such required experience. Candidates must submit a minimum of 1 supervisory reference and 2 additional references each supporting character and competency as an ESD Engineer, and must compose 10 original multiple choice questions with correct answers and supporting references. Candidates must pass the iNARTE ESDC Engineer examination.

An Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Technician has knowledge of the instruments and test setups of EMC, and has good writing and verbal skills. Technicians know the pitfalls of real measurements.This mid-level credential is applicable to professional technicians practicing in EMC fields to include bonding, grounding, shielding, EMI prediction, EMI analysis, conducted and radiated interference, lightning protection and more. All candidates have to be competent in the fundamentals, i.e., coupling, filters, and shielding. Candidates must provide specific record of six years or more of experience in EMC technician work, and must have graduated from an iNARTE-approved electronics technology curriculum of two years; or U.S. Navy Class "A" school is considered equivalent to one year of required experience. The satisfactory completion of each year of such an approved technician curriculum is considered equivalent to one year experience. Candidates must submit a minimum of 1 supervisory reference and 2 additional references each supporting character and competency as an EMC Technician, and must compose 10 original multiple choice questions with correct answers and supporting references. Candidates must also pass the iNARTE EMC Technician examination.

B-VoIP technicians have knowledge of protocols used for the telecommunications industry and are familiar with telecom industry acronyms and language. Though ETA-I does not require any specific training, education or experience for candidates of the B-VoIP certification, candidates are strongly encouraged to have the requisite knowledge and experience necessary to challenge the exam.

The Electronics Technicians Association, International (ETA-I), Fiber Optics Technician (Outside Plant) (FOT-OSP) is an intermediate-level certification for professionals who terminate, test and troubleshoot single-mode fiber optic communication systems. FOT-OSPs understand optical loss budgets, not to exceed loss budgets and has the knowledge and skills required for troubleshooting single-mode OSP fiber optic communications systems addressing the roles of attenuation, dispersion and refection and how to identify and troubleshoot each. Though ETA-I does not require any specific education, training, or experience for the standalone FOT-OSP, candidates are strongly encouraged to have the requisite knowledge and experience necessary to challenge the exam.

Electrical Generating Systems Association (EGSA), Electrical Generator Systems Technician Certification - Journeyman identifies technicians who not only have a broad knowledge of electricity, mechanical and electrical components and the interaction between them, but are proficient in the installation, service, maintenance, and repair of On-Site Power generation systems. Applicants should have a comprehensive knowledge of basic electricity, the functions of a gen-set’s mechanical and electrical components, the interactions and relationships among components and an understanding of various elements of the installation, service, maintenance, and repair of gen-sets and On-Site Power generation systems. Applicants must have a minimum of three years of experience as an electrical power generator equipment technician and pass a written exam.

The National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET), Electrical Power Testing - Level I credential is an entry-level certification for electrical technicians who test equipment used in the production, transmission, and distribution of electrical power. The certification validates a technician’s knowledge required to inspect, test and maintain electrical power equipment. Electrical Power Testing - Level I technicians work under the supervision of a higher-level technician and performs duties such as isolating and ground power equipment safely; connecting test equipment; and conducting and documenting standard tests of basic single-function equipment. Candidates are required to have minimum of one year of practical experience supporting testing and maintenance of electrical power equipment, including basic electrical safety procedures and must pass a written exam.

The National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET), Electrical Power Testing - Level III certification is an intermediate-level credential designed for technicians who test equipment used in the production, transmission, and distribution of electrical power. The certification validates knowledge required to inspect, test and maintain electrical power equipment. Electrical Power Testing - Level III technicians manage switching procedures; conduct tests of complex (multi-function) equipment; analyze test and equipment data; and plan a job and lead a team. Candidates must have a minimum of five years of practical experience in the testing of electrical power equipment, including a full range of equipment in low, medium, and high voltage systems and one year of supervision and project management of two or three-person test crews. Candidates must pass a written examination.

The Electronics Technicians Association, International (ETA-I), Termination and Testing Technician (TTT) certification is recommended for mid-career level technicians. The Electrical Generator Systems Technician Certification - Apprentice credential is an entry-level certification that demonstrates an individual's knowledge of on-site power generation equipment and systems. The Apprentice level exam provides technical college students, recent graduates, military personnel and other 1st or 2nd-year technicians with proof that the basic skill set has been met. The certification exam is written to assess knowledge that is necessary for proficient job performance. The exam includes questions about electricity and other topics relevant to the field of electrical generator systems.
