The Electronics Technicians Association, International (ETA-I), Avionics Electronics Technicians (AVN) certification is designed to assess the knowledge and skills of individuals who install, maintain and adjust electronics equipment, cabling and the accessories used in aviation communications and control equipment. It is highly recommended that the Avionics technician have an FCC General Radio Telephone Operator license. Candidates must hold the Associate Certified Electronics Technician (CETa) certification prior to taking the Avionics Electronics Technician exam. Several of the topics covered in this examination include: Avionics Systems, Cabling, Computers and Digital Concepts, Amplifiers, Interfacing, Antennas and Transmission Lines Components, Mathematics, Network Topologies and Infrastructures, People Relations, Optical Cabling, Safety, Test Equipment and Tools and Satellite Communications.

RECERTIFICATION

Avionics Electronics Technician (AVN)

Renewal Period: 4 years

The Avionics Electronics Technician (AVN) credential has the following recertification information:

  • The Avionics Electronics Technician (AVN) is renewable every four years. Certification holders must earn 10 continuing education credits per year, for a total of 40 hrs over the term of the certification and submit annually to receive credit. Must also provide employer verification of work in an applicable field.   

    Detailed information related to the recertification process, associated fees and forms can be obtained on the ETA-I website.

    Note: If the four year term for the AVN is exceeded without renewal by certification maintenance, and the certification expires, then the certification holder will be required to retake the current version of the examination and will then again be eligible for the certification maintenance.

Additional considerations for the Avionics Electronics Technician (AVN) include:

  • Avionics Electronics Technician (AVN) can be used as a stand-alone ETA Certification, or as the Journeyman Option specialty exam for the CET, Certified Electronics Technician.
