BICSI Technician certification test candidates on their ability to understand and apply a comprehensive collection of installation-specific information. Individuals preparing to sit for the ITS Technician exam must possess at least three years of current and verifiable ITS industry installation experience. Participants must also be able to distinguish between different colors and possess manual dexterity to complete fine motor tasks. The ITS Technician exam is currently based on the ITSIMM and is a two-part exam, hands-on and written. To become a BICSI ITS Technician, you must successfully pass both parts. If an individual does not hold both the ITS Copper and Optical Fiber Installer 2 credentials, the written exam will have an additional 30 questions.

Other REQUIREMENTS
The Technician (TECH) credential has the following other requirements:
- Candidates must follow the BICSI Standards of Conduct.
- Candidates must follow the BICSI Code of Ethics.
After passing the written and hands-on exam, Technicians are required to apply their knowledge on the job.
- Each Technician will receive an OJT Booklet with task areas, including steps that must be completed under supervision within the three-year Technician registration period. All tasks must be performed by the Technician and signed in the OJT Booklet by a qualified witness.
It is recommended that candidates take TE350: BICSI ITS Technician Training Course.

Additional considerations for the Technician (TECH) include:
- Technician examinees are strongly encouraged to:
- complete at least 50 hours of independent or group study of BICSI's Information Technology Systems Installation Methods Manual (ITSIMM),
- attend the BICSI TE350: Technician training course (before coming to class, candidates are strongly encouraged to read the ITSIMM and put in at least 50+ hours of independent study),
- and also study all ICT related chapters of NFPA 70 (the National Electric Code) and ANSI/TIA telecommunications standards.
