This series includes positions the duties of which are to receive and prepare patients for dental treatment; to prepare materials and equipment for use by the dentist; to assist a dentist at chairside or bedside in the treatment of patients; to perform reversible intra-oral procedures under the supervision of the dentist; to perform dental radiography work; and to keep records of appointments, examinations, treatments and supplies. This work requires a practical knowledge of standardized procedures and methods used in dentistry, and skill in the techniques and procedures of dental assistance.

Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) certification validates ability to provide support in administrative duties: chairside, laboratory, and radiological procedures, as defined by existing state laws. Dental Assistant is an integral member of the dental health team, competent via education, experience, and understanding of patient welfare. As an agent of the Dentist, the Dental Assistant strives to cultivate good will and confidence within the dental practice. The Registered Dental Assistant is a mid skill level certification and requires applicants to have some experience and be graduates from an accredited program.

Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification demonstrates that the individual meets the national standard for knowledge that underlies surgical technologist and surgical first assistance practice. Certified individuals possess mastery of a broad range of skills related to surgical procedures, aseptic technique and patient care. This is a mid- level certification and requires individuals to be a graduate of a surgical technology accredited program or hold a current or previous Certified Surgical Technologist certification.

Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) represents a medical assistant who has been certified by the Certifying Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) to have ability to work in ambulatory settings, such as physicians' offices, clinics and group practices. Medical assistants have a great amount of variety in their jobs and are cross-trained to perform many administrative and clinical duties. The duties of medical assistants vary from office to office, depending on office location, size, and specialty. Clinical duties vary according to state law and include taking medical histories and recording vital signs, explaining treatment procedures to patients, preparing patients for examination, and assisting the physician during the examination. Medical assistants collect and prepare laboratory specimens or perform basic laboratory tests on the premises, dispose of contaminated supplies, and sterilize medical instruments. This is a mid-level certification and requires applicants to be graduates of an accredited medical assisting program and pass a written exam.

Medical Assistant (MA) certification validates ability to perform routine administrative and clinical tasks to keep the offices and clinics of numerous health professionals running smoothly. Medical Assistant is an integral member of the health care delivery team, qualified by education and experience to work in the administrative office, the examining room and the physician office laboratory. They are also a liaison between the doctor and the patient. Duties for Medical Assistants vary depending on the state in which an MA practices. This is an intermediate skill level certification, and requires applicants to meet experience and/or education requirements.

The Dental Assisting National Board (DANB), Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) credential is an intermediate-level certification for dental technicians and dental office professionals who assist dentists, set up dental equipment, prepare patients for treatment, and keep records. CDAs have the knowledge and applied skill-level necessary to provide general chairside assisting, practice radiation health and safety, support infection control activities, and perform other dental assisting-related work requirements. CDAs fill a variety of roles in the dental office; some of these include preparing patients for dental procedures, ensuring sterility in the dental environment, assisting dentists during procedures by providing tools and materials, working with suppliers to schedule deliveries, helping patients schedule appointments, teaching patients about proper oral health, and taking patient x-rays. Applicants for the CDA are required to meet education and experience requirements. Applicants must also take a written exam.

Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) is a mid-level certification. The role of the central sterile technician is to learn and perform all aspects of sterile processing functions with basic surgical instrumentation in the health care workplace. These areas include A&P, microbiology, infection control, decontamination, surgical instrumentation, prep and packaging, sterilization and inventory control. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements and pass an exam.

National Commission for the Certification of Surgical Assistants (NCCSA), Certified Surgical Assistants (CSA) validates mastery of skills unique to surgical technology, as well as an on-going commitment to quality patient care. Surgical assistants provide support to surgeons before and during an operation and a limited amount of care to patients after an operation. They have multiple duties associated with preparing for and participating in surgery. Pre-surgery duties include determining what equipment will be needed for an operation; positioning x-rays or other images for reference; moving and positioning patients; and inserting catheters. During surgery, they drape patients according to the surgeon's instructions; hand over instruments requested by the surgeon; retract, clamp, ligate and cut tissues as instructed; maintain a sterile environment; insert drainage tubes; close wounds; and select and apply bandages. This is a mid level certification. Applicants should have completed prior approved Surgical Assistant Training Programs or be a graduate from a health field. Military medical training is accepted.

The Dental Assisting National Board (DANB), Certified Orthodontic Assistant (COA) credential is for an intermediate-level dental professional who specializes in orthodontics. COAs possess the knowledge and applied skill level necessary to perform the tasks required of orthodontic assistants. Applicants must meet a combination of education and experience. The COA exam consists of two component exams that must be passed in order to earn the credential.

The Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD), Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Surgical Instrument Specialist (CSIS) credential is for candidates who have a current/valid CBSPD certification as a SPD Technician (CSPDT) and meets experience and/or education requirements. Minimum experience requirements includes 24 months of full-time employment performing Operating Room surgical instrument processing activities. Candidates must complete a written examination.

Medical Assistants perform both clinical and administrative tasks necessary for day-to-day operations of physician offices and other health care practices. NCCT requires that candidates meet educational and other requirements.

The NCCT Medical Office Assistant (NCMOA) is an entry-level health care certification. Medical Office Assistants are responsible for medical office administrative tasks such as making direct patient contact and performing front office functions including but not limited to scheduling, communicating, handling medical records, and discussing financial-related concerns. NCMOAs comply with state and federal regulations. NCCT requires that candidates meet educational and other requirements.

The NCCT National Patient Care Technician (NCPCT) is an entry-level certification. NCPCTs possess the knowledge necessary to perform duties and tasks necessary for providing health care to patients. The Patient Care Technician's role varies across States but often they are responsible for assisting physicians, nurses, and other support staff in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, assisted living facilities, or nursing homes. The PCTs must possess knowledge and skills in the areas of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology. They assist with activities of daily living, collect and take vital signs, have knowledge of medical law and ethics, support infection control, perform tasks involved in phlebotomy and electrocardiography. NCCT requires that candidates meet educational and other requirements.

The National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT), Tech in Surgery (TS-C) is an intermediate-level surgical technologist credential. TS-Cs are allied health professionals responsible for various tasks pre-, intra-, and post- operatively. TS-Cs maintain asepsis during surgery, anticipating the surgeon's needs while remaining attentive to the surgical procedure to ensure a safe environment for the patient. Surgical technologists work under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel; their duties vary depending upon the facility. TS-Cs must meet educational, training, and other eligibility requirements.

Certified Medical Administrative Specialist (CMAS) certification validates ability to manage medical records, insurance processing, coding and billing, information processing, and fundamental office management tasks. This is an entry level administrative certification for medical administrative specialists who serve a key role in medical office, clinic and hospital settings. A medical administrative specialist is very familiar with clinical and technical concepts required to coordinate administrative office functions in the healthcare setting. Candidates must meet minimum education, experience, and/or prerequisite requirements.

The National Healthcareer Association (NHA), Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) is an intermediate-level allied health care professional credential. CCMAs specialize in procedures commonly performed in ambulatory health care settings. Medical assistants perform both clinical and administrative duties and assist a variety of providers including physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants. They typically work in medical offices, clinics, urgent care centers and may work in general medicine or specialty practices. Applicants for the CCMA are required to pass an exam, have a high school diploma or equivalent, and meet training or experience requirements.

The National Healthcare Association (NHA), Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) is an entry-level credential for healthcare professionals who provide customer service for patients. CMAAs review and answer practice correspondence, operate computer systems to accomplish office tasks, answer calls, schedule appointments, greet patients, maintain files, update and maintain patient and other practice-specific information, and coordinate operation reports such as time and attendance. Candidates are required to complete a NHA-approved training program.

The Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CPSPD), Certified Ambulatory Surgery Technician (CASSPT) credential is for candidates with at least 12 months experience performing Ambulatory Surgery sterile processing activities. Other options for qualification include completion of an Ambulatory Surgery Sterile Processing Training Course, completion of a related allied health program plus six months employment practicing Ambulatory Surgery sterile processing, or 12 months experience in healthcare product sales or services. Candidates must meet education and/or experience requirements and pass a written examination.

The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) Registered Radiologist Assistant (R.R.A.) certification recognizes individuals who are qualified to perform the role of a Registered Radiologist Assistant. This certification is for advanced-level radiographers who extend the capacity of the radiologist. R.R.A.s are radiographers who've completed an additional, specialized educational program, then earned certification and registration as a radiologist assistant (RA) through ARRT. They are qualified to perform many procedures that a radiologist would otherwise have to do. R.R.A.s perform patient assessment, patient management, and selected clinical imaging procedures. Candidates for the R.R.A. certification must be certified and registered with ARRT in Radiography; must successfully complete a radiologist assistant (RA) educational program that meets the ARRT's recognition criteria; must hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited educational institution; and must have completed at least one year of full-time clinical radiography experience after earning the radiography credential. Candidates must also pass an examination.

The National Healthcareer Association (NHA), Certified Patient Care Technician/Assistant (CPCT/A) is an entry-level certification for allied healthcare professionals who assist with the critical day-to-day care of patients. CPCT/As work with doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals to provide direct patient care. Some of the tasks that CPCT/As perform in their work include bathing, feeding, providing catheter care, acquiring, distributing, and administering patient care supplies, performing safety checks and ensuring cleanliness in patient rooms, accommodating special needs of patients, obtaining EKG readings and monitor vital signs, performing phlebotomy procedures, providing emotional support to patients and families, particularly coping with grief and death. CPCT/A applicants must pass the written exam, in addition to meeting education and training or work experience eligibility requirements.

The Certification Board for Radiology Practitioner Assistants (CBRPA), Radiology Practitioner Assistant (RPA) certification is for mid-level practitioners in Radiology. An RPA is a health professional certified and registered as a radiographer and credentialed to provide primary radiology health care services with physician supervision. Within the physician/RPA relationship, RPAs exercise autonomy in decision making in the role of a primary caregiver with regard to patient assessment, patient management and in providing a broad range of medical imaging and interventional services. To earn the RPA certification, candidates must be an active registered American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) radiographer, possess Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification, and meet both education and experience requirements. Candidates must also pass a written exam.

The Dental Assisting National Board (DANB), Certified Preventive Functions Dental Assistant (CPFDA) certification is for dental assistants or dental hygienists who possess knowledge and skills in coronal polish, sealants, and topical fluoride. To earn the CPFDA certification, candidates must meet one of the eligibility requirement pathways, possess current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) from a DANB-accepted provider, and pass a three-part written exam.

The Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS) assists medical staff and nursing personnel in the location and gathering of needed instrumentation, supplies and equipment. They also assist in the decontamination and assembly of instrumentation and supplies for sterilization. The CIS exam tests knowledge and recognition of medical instruments, as well as reviews instrumentation practice skills. Applicants are required to have a current Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) status and minimum 200 hours of hands on experience in instrument decontamination, assembly information system management and surgery observation. The Dental Assisting National Board (DANB), Certified Restorative Functions Dental Assistant (CRFDA) is an intermediate-level credential for dental assistants. Individuals holding the CRFDA are trained to complete complex tasks such as filling restorations, making final impressions for a crown, a bridge, and removable partial dentures and filling and polishing amalgams. There are several pathways to meet DANBs certification eligibility requirements. All CRFDA applicants and credential holders must have current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or equivalent certificates and be graduates of a Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA)-accredited dental assisting program. Applicants must pass all CRFDA exam components to become certified. Each state has different requirements for dental assistants; to practice and work, individuals must meet their state Dental Assisting National Board eligibility and licensing requirements.
