The Dental Assisting National Board (DANB), Certified Restorative Functions Dental Assistant (CRFDA) is an intermediate-level credential for dental assistants. Individuals holding the CRFDA are trained to complete complex tasks such as filling restorations, making final impressions for a crown, a bridge, and removable partial dentures and filling and polishing amalgams. There are several pathways to meet DANBs certification eligibility requirements. All CRFDA applicants and credential holders must have current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or equivalent certificates and be graduates of a Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA)-accredited dental assisting program. Applicants must pass all CRFDA exam components to become certified. Each state has different requirements for dental assistants; to practice and work, individuals must meet their state Dental Assisting National Board eligibility and licensing requirements.

Credential Pre-requisite REQUIREMENTS
All applicants must have a current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) from a DANB-accepted CPR provider.
Education/Training and/or Experience REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must be a current or former DANB CDA whose certification has lapsed for no more than two years.
Pathway 2:Applicants must be a graduate of a Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA)-accredited dental assisting program.
Pathway 3:
Applicants must
- Complete an Expanded Functions Dental Assisting or restorative course/program offered by an institution with a CODA-accredited dental assisting, dental hygiene or dental program. (Each function does not have to be listed separately, but the documentation must indicate that expanded functions/duties or restorative functions/duties were included in the course curriculum.)
- Have a minimum of 3,500 hours work experience as a dental assistant, accrued during the previous two to four years; employment must be verified by a licensed dentist.
Other REQUIREMENTS
The Certified Restorative Functions Dental Assistant (CRFDA) credential has the following other requirements:
- Applicants must have Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) from a DANB-accepted provider; must be current at the date of application and exam.
- Applicants must find the state’s requirement for dental assistants from their state dental board before applying for a job in their state. Each state has different rules around the expanded functions dental assistants are allowed to perform, the requirements they must meet and any state-specific exam they must pass. DANB's CRFDA and CPFDA certifications are national, voluntary credentials that may or may not be recognized in any state. DANB also administers state-specific exams that are recognized or required.
