This series includes positions requiring professional knowledge of the concepts, principles, and practices of occupational therapy to provide clinical services, supervise or train students and therapists, or perform research with people who have impaired capacities for performing activities appropriate to their age group. The work requires knowledge of the structure and function of the human body, environmental influences, human development, physical and psychosocial dysfunctions, and skill in developing treatment plans to teach new skills, restore performance, or learn compensating skills.

The Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT), Music Therapist - Board Certified (MT-BC) is an intermediate-level certification offered by CBMT. The MT-BC is designed to demonstrate professionalism, subject-knowledge attainment, and expertise to interested stakeholders such as employers and clients. An MT-BC works in the health care industry and administers music-based therapy to assist clients in reaching their therapeutic goals. To obtain the MT-BC, applicants must meet eligibility criteria and pass an exam.

Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA) validates individuals ability to provide services for people suffering from mental, physical, emotional or developmental impairments. Occupational therapist assistants work under the direction of occupational therapists in a variety of healthcare settings, including outpatient treatment centers and clinics. They monitor patients' activities, record progress and document billing. This is a mid level certification. Applicants must hold an associate degree from an accredited occupational therapy program recognized by NBCOT and complete all fieldwork requirements to qualify to sit for the exam.

Renewal Period: 3 years

The Occupational Therapist Registered (OTR) credential is an advanced career-level certification. The exam assesses students' functional development level providing appropriate treatment to meet individual student objectives. OTR candidates must graduate from an occupational therapy program at the masters or doctoral level and complete all fieldwork requirements. OTR candidates are required to evaluate individuals and groups for rehabilitative services, while making a determination of need that sets priorities of treatment. OTR applicants must establish therapeutic intervention strategies for target populations. Intervention planning must be focused and accurate with regard to functional goals.

The National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification, Inc., Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) credential is designed to recognize qualified professionals in the field of recreational therapy. Recreational therapy utilizes activity-based interventions to address the needs of individuals with illnesses and/or disabling conditions to aid in recovery and improve overall well-being. Recreational therapy is a process designed to aid clients in their functioning so they may more fully participate in life. Certification of a recreational therapist quickly communicates to employers and clients that the therapist has achieved certain standards of professionalism, education, and experience. To obtain a CTRS certification, candidates must meet eligibility requirements and pass an exam.

Renewal Period: 5 years

Occupational Hearing Conservationist (OHC) is an entry-level certification for individuals who can conduct the practice of hearing conservation, including a pure-tone air conduction hearing evaluation and other associated duties under appropriate supervision, and who can function with other members of the occupational hearing conservation program team. OHCs are audiologists, physicians, occupational health nurses, human resources directors, workplace safety officers or any person interested in occupational hearing conservation or appointed by management to perform audiometric testing or enforce HCP compliance. Candidates must complete a Council for Accreditation of Occupational Hearing Conservation (CAOHC)-approved, 20-hour certification course and earn a passing score on the exam.

The American Medical Certification Association (AMCA), Professional Healthcare Instructor Certification (PHIC) is for the experienced allied healthcare instructor who is knowledgeable about teaching adult learners and addressing individual learning styles. To earn the PHIC, candidates must be at least 18 years of age, possess a high school diploma or equivalent, and meet a training program or experience requirement. Candidates must also pass a written exam.
