The Dental Assisting National Board (DANB), Certified Preventive Functions Dental Assistant (CPFDA) certification is for dental assistants or dental hygienists who possess knowledge and skills in coronal polish, sealants, and topical fluoride. To earn the CPFDA certification, candidates must meet one of the eligibility requirement pathways, possess current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) from a DANB-accepted provider, and pass a three-part written exam.

Education/Training and/or Experience REQUIREMENTS
- Candidates must possess a current DANB Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) certification.
- Candidates must verify knowledge- or performance-based competency in each of the four CPFDA functions. See the Exam Eligibility Requirements for additional information.
- Candidates must be a graduate from a Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA)-accredited dental assisting or dental hygiene program.
- Candidates must verify knowledge- or performance-based competency in each of the four CPFDA functions. See the Exam Eligibility Requirements for additional information.
- Candidates must be former DANB Certified Dental Assistants (CDAs) whose certification lapsed no more than two years ago.
- Candidates must have a minimum of 3,500 hours work experience as a dental assistant, accrued over the previous four years (employment must be verified by a licensed dentist).
- Candidates must verify knowledge- or performance-based competency in each of the four CPFDA functions. See the Exam Eligibility Requirements for additional information.
- Candidates must possess a current Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) license.
- Candidates must possess a minimum of 3,500 hours work experience as a dental hygienist, accrued over the previous four years (employment must be verified by a licensed dentist).
Note: If the RDH license is issued in Alabama and the candidate is not a graduate of a Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA)-accredited dental hygiene program, the candidate must meet the requirements of Pathway I, 2 or 3.
