The American Board for Occupational Health Nurses (ABOHN), Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN) certification is for occupational health nurses whose practices involve clinician, coordinator, advisor, and case manager roles. COHN candidates must possess a current, active RN license and have completed one of the following in the past five years: 3,000 hours of occupational health nursing experience for paid compensation or a certificate program in occupational health nursing for academic credit from a National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH) funded Education and Research Center (ERC) program. Time spent in a graduate program related to occupational health or in a baccalaureate completion program may be considered for a portion of the occupational health nursing work experience requirement. Candidates must also pass a written exam.

The American Board for Occupational Health Nurses (ABOHN), Case Management is an intermediate-level certification for professionals who coordinate health care services for individuals following illness or injury. The occupational health nurse case manager coordinates efforts of health care teams to facilitate an individual client's health care services from the onset of injury or illness to safe return to work or optimal alternative. Case management includes the development of preventive systems and the mobilization of appropriate resources for care over the course of the health event. Care is delivered with the objective of returning the worker to pre-illness or pre-injury function or to the highest level of functioning achievable. Candidates for the Case Management certification are required to be current licensed RNs or international equivalent and must pass the exam.

The purpose of AMCB certification program is to set the national standard for the profession of midwifery and to protect the public by ensuring that certified individuals have met pre-determined criteria for safe practice. The exam is intended to assess the cognitive knowledge of a beginning midwifery practitioner (CNM or CM) to include both normal and abnormal, physical examination findings, lab values, physiology, pharmacology, and clinical decision making. The level of practice measures entry-level midwifery practice as a beginning practitioner. The audience for AMCB’s certification programs are successful graduates of an accredited educational program for nurse-midwives or midwives with a graduate degree. CNM candidates must also have an active RN license.

The Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) is an intermediate level credential that measures the attainment of a defined body of nursing knowledge pertinent to that specialty. To qualify for the exam, candidates must hold a current, unrestricted Registered Nurse license in the United States or its Territories. A nursing certificate that is equivalent to a Registered Nurse in the United States is also acceptable. BCEN recommends that candidates have two years of experience in the emergency department, but it is not required.

The Certified Flight Registered Nurse (CFRN) is an intermediate level credential that measures the attainment of a defined body of nursing knowledge specific to flight nursing. To qualify for the exam, a candidate must be a Registered Nurse with a current, unrestricted license. A nursing certificate that is equivalent to a registered nurse in the United States is also acceptable. BCEN recommends two years of experience as a flight nurse; however, it is not required.

The Competency & Credentialing Institute (CCI), Certified Nurse Operative Room (CNOR) certification is for perioperative nurses. CNOR candidates must have a current unrestricted RN license, be currently working full-time or part-time in perioperative nursing in the area of nursing education, administration, research or clinical practice, and have completed a minimum of two years and 2,400 hours of experience in perioperative nursing, with a minimum of 50% (1,200 hours) in the intraoperative setting. Candidates must also pass a written exam.

Renewal Period: 1 year

The Certified Manager (CM) is a general management certification. It is appropriate for supervisors, managers and leaders at all levels, in any industry, and benefits certificate recipients and their organizations. The CM program consists of 3 course modules of which each includes a study manual, online learning resources, practice exams and a certification exam. To earn the CM certification one must pass three certification exams. Successful completion of the CM exams is a reliable indicator that an individual possesses the skills that leaders and managers need. Eligibility for the CM certification is determined by a point system that considers both experience and education. A candidate must have at least 10 points including at least 3 Education points, and at least 4 Experience points. Candidates may count a maximum of 6 Education points and 7 Experience Points toward eligibility. Those who do not qualify for CM status may still participate in the CM program if they have met at least one of the minimum eligibility requirements. These individuals will earn Associate Certified Manager (ACM) status upon completion of the program. An ACM may earn full CM status through additional education and/or experience.

The National Commission for Health Education Credentialing (NCHEC) Certified Health Education Specialist is an entry-level credential for individuals desiring to have their competency and professionalism in health education verified for potential employers, clients or other stakeholders. Health educators provide and manage health education programs that help individuals and their communities maximize and maintain healthy lifestyles. The exam covers the various aspects of being a health educator such as assessing needs and resources, planning and implementing health education, evaluation and research, and advocating for health. Certified individuals should be able to plan and implement programs designed to encourage healthy lifestyles, policies and environments as well as act as a resource to individuals and the community.

The BONENT Certified Hemodialysis Nurse (CHN) examination measures nursing proficiency in certain skills, tasks and general areas of knowledge in hemodialysis. The examination tests the following four major domains of practice and tasks performed in the scope of hemodialysis nursing: supervision/administration, dialysis and related issues, professional development and environmental control. This is a high level certification and requires applicants to have RN with valid license and one year of experience in an ESRD facility (copy of valid license).

National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). This is a mid-level licensing exam, required by the national council of state boards of Nursing. The NCLEX-RN is a national, standardized, multiple-choice exam for registered nurses developed and controlled by the national council of states boards of nursing. The exam is application oriented related to the job functions most commonly required of entry-level RNs. The exam tests current medical knowledge nursing competencies and determines eligibility to earn a RN license and begin working as a registered Nurse.

The Certified Transport Registered Nurse (CTRN) is an intermediate level credential that measures the attainment of a defined body of nursing knowledge specific to critical care ground transport nursing. The CBIC Certified in Infection Control (CIC) credential is for professionals who have competence in the actual practice of infection prevention and control and healthcare epidemiology, and is intended for individuals who are actively accountable for the infection prevention and control program within their current position. Candidates must have a post-secondary degree from an accredited institution and sufficient experience in infection prevention and control. There is no specific time requirement that defines “sufficient experience;” however CBIC emphasizes that this certification examination is geared toward the professional who has had at least two years of full-time experience in infection prevention and control.

The Medical Surgical Nursing Certification Board (MSNCB), Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (CMSRN) is an intermediate-level certification for RNs who provide care for primarily adult patients before and after surgical procedures. CMSRNs attend to attend to patients who are being treated with pharmaceuticals to manage illness. Due to the broad range of medical conditions CMSRNs encounter, they must be well-versed in a large variety of health conditions. CMSRNs are required to meet experiential and licensure requirements and to pass the exam.
