Positions in this series provide support to health care management officials by analyzing, evaluating, advising on and/or coordinating health care delivery systems and operations. Such positions may be located within an operating health care facility or at a higher organizational echelon. In addition to a high degree of analytical ability, positions in this series require specialized knowledge of the basic principles and practices related to the management of health care delivery systems. These positions do not have line authority.

The Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) certification denotes expertise in managing patient health information and medical records, administering computer information systems, collecting and analyzing patient data, and using classification systems and medical terminologies. Candidates possess comprehensive knowledge of medical, administrative, ethical and legal requirements and standards related to healthcare delivery and the privacy of protected patient information. Candidates must have at least a bachelor's degree in an HIM program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).

The Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification denotes expertise in ensuring the quality of medical records by verifying their completeness, accuracy, and proper entry into computer systems. Candidates use computer systems to assemble and analyze patient data for the purpose of improving patient care or controlling costs, and often specialize in coding diagnoses and procedures in patient records for reimbursement and research. Candidates must have at least an associate's degree in an HIM program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).

Renewal Period: 3 years

The Institute of Management Consultants, Certified Management Consultant - Basic credential is an intermediate-level certification recommended for individuals with at least 3 years of relevant experience. Individuals who have earned the Certified Management Consultant - Basic provide management objective advice and assistance relating to the strategy, structure, management and operations of an organization in pursuit of its long-term purposes and objectives. Such assistance may include the identification of options with recommendations and the provision of an additional resource or the implementation of solutions. Interested candidates must have 3 to 9 years of management consulting experience as independent or internal consultants with five satisfactory clients' evaluations. Applicants must also have either a Bachelor's degree or at least 5 years of work experience including 3 years of full time consulting plus significant professional education in management consulting. Candidates must pass a written and a Peer Review oral examination with three senior consultants who are Certified Management Consultants.

The NCCT Medical Office Assistant (NCMOA) is an entry-level health care certification. Medical Office Assistants are responsible for medical office administrative tasks such as making direct patient contact and performing front office functions including but not limited to scheduling, communicating, handling medical records, and discussing financial-related concerns. NCMOAs comply with state and federal regulations. NCCT requires that candidates meet educational and other requirements.

Renewal Period: 3 years

Certified Medical Administrative Specialist (CMAS) certification validates ability to manage medical records, insurance processing, coding and billing, information processing, and fundamental office management tasks. This is an entry level administrative certification for medical administrative specialists who serve a key role in medical office, clinic and hospital settings. A medical administrative specialist is very familiar with clinical and technical concepts required to coordinate administrative office functions in the healthcare setting. Candidates must meet minimum education, experience, and/or prerequisite requirements.

The National Healthcare Association (NHA), Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) is an entry-level credential for healthcare professionals who provide customer service for patients. CMAAs review and answer practice correspondence, operate computer systems to accomplish office tasks, answer calls, schedule appointments, greet patients, maintain files, update and maintain patient and other practice-specific information, and coordinate operation reports such as time and attendance. Candidates are required to complete a NHA-approved training program.

The National Association Medical Staff Services (NAMSS), Certified Provider Credentialing Specialist (CPCS) certification is for individuals typically employed or contracted by a healthcare organization including, but not limited to, hospitals (health systems), health plans, ambulatory care settings, group practices, and credentialing verification organizations. CPCSs are an integral part of a credentialing team focusing on the areas of credentialing, privileging, and primary source verification. CPCS candidates must be currently employed in the medical services profession for at least the past 12 consecutive months and have a total of three years of experience in the medical services profession within the past five years. Candidates must also pass a written exam.

The National Association Medical Staff Services (NAMSS), Certified Professional in Medical Services Management (CPMSM) certification is for Medical Services Professionals (MSPs) with knowledge of healthcare credentialing, governance, law, accreditation, and regulatory compliance. A CPMSM is typically employed by a hospital/health system, ambulatory surgery center, managed care organization/health plan, credentials verification organization, or group practice where the staff is performing the management functions of medical services and compliance with accrediting standards. CPMSM candidates must be currently employed in the medical service profession for at least the past 12 consecutive months and have a total of five years of experience in the medical services profession within the past eight years. Candidates must also pass a written exam.

The National Healthcareer Association (NHA), Certified Electronic Health Record Specialist (CEHRS) is an entry-level certification for allied healthcare professionals have work responsibilities that involve securing and assuring complete and accurate patient care data. CEHRSs audit patient records for compliance, abstract clinical information for reports, perform basic coding to submit reimbursement claims, process Release of Information (ROI) requests for medical records, and support a variety of other health record-related activities. Applicants for the CEHRS are required to meet educational and experience-related criteria, and must also pass an exam.

The National Association of Healthcare Access Management (NAHAM) established the Certified Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA) program to promote the highest standards of patient access services through the credentialing of those working at the front lines of patient access. Responsibilities of patient access services include: scheduling, admissions, registration, patient finance, guest relations or other related services. Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent plus 30 professional development contact hours earned within the previous two years and one year in healthcare or finance industry.

The Association for Strategic Planning (ASP) Strategic Planning Professional Level I certification is for candidates that wish to bring together the latest strategic thinking concepts, strategic planning techniques and Balanced Scorecard best-practices. Strategic planning is an organization's process of defining its strategy, or direction, and making decisions on allocating its resources to pursue this strategy. It may also extend to control mechanisms for guiding the implementation of the strategy. Candidates must be a college graduate or have or 5 years' work experience in strategic planning or related field with a minimum of 2 years in an internal planning role or as a junior external planning consultant.

The Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) - Certified Healthcare Technology Manager (CHTM) is an intermediate level certification for individuals with healthcare technology management expertise. A CHTM is responsible for planning and directing activities of other healthcare technology management (HTM) professionals, monitoring work, and taking corrective actions, when necessary. The CHTM covers management of healthcare technology operations and management of personnel. CHTMs are expected to have the skills and understanding needed to perform strategic, business, and change management as well as employee relations. Candidates must meet the educational and experiential eligibility criteria through one of five pathways and must pass a written exam.
