The Institute of Management Consultants, Certified Management Consultant - Basic credential is an intermediate-level certification recommended for individuals with at least 3 years of relevant experience. Individuals who have earned the Certified Management Consultant - Basic provide management objective advice and assistance relating to the strategy, structure, management and operations of an organization in pursuit of its long-term purposes and objectives. Such assistance may include the identification of options with recommendations and the provision of an additional resource or the implementation of solutions. Interested candidates must have 3 to 9 years of management consulting experience as independent or internal consultants with five satisfactory clients' evaluations. Applicants must also have either a Bachelor's degree or at least 5 years of work experience including 3 years of full time consulting plus significant professional education in management consulting. Candidates must pass a written and a Peer Review oral examination with three senior consultants who are Certified Management Consultants.

Candidates must have a combined total of 40 or more points to be eligible for certification. Points are assigned as follows:

  • Education - minimum of 12 points are required, applicants who have not earned a bachelor's degree must earn at least 12 Continuing Professional Development points. IMC awards a maximum of 28 points in the Education category.
    • Continuing Professional Development (CPD) = 1 point per presentation, 2 points per course
    • Bachelor's degree = 6 points
    • Master's degree = 2 points
    • Terminal degree (e.g. PhD, DSC) = 2 points
  • Work Experience - candidates must document a minimum of 12 points (no more than 54 Work Experience points may be applied toward a candidate's point total.)
    • Non-consulting business experience = 1 point per year
    • Independent or internal consulting experience= 4 points per year, minimum of 3 years
    • Submit Application for the CMC with Engagement Summaries= 2 points per Engagement Summary, 3 minimum to 5 maximum required 
    • Submit satisfactory Client Evaluations = 2 points per evaluation, 5 minimum required 
  • IMC USA or Other Professional Activities - this category is not required, a maximum of 12 points may be awarded in this category.
    • Attend the IMC USA National Conference, NOW, or other regional conferences including those of other professional or trade organizations = 1 point per day of attendance
    • Taught a university or comparable course = 1 point per 3 hours of instruction
    • Publish magazine articles or books nationally = 1 point per book or article* Note, this includes electronic publication of articles or books, and operation of a blog.
    • Present at an IMC USA or other professional organization’s event or meeting= 1 point per session
    • Provide online instruction via webinar or similar delivery method = 1 point per session

The Certified Management Consultant - Basic credential has the following other requirements:

  • Applicants should not have been subject to, or charged with, any:

    • felonies or misdemeanors directed related to consulting practice
    • civil legal action directly related to management consulting practice
    • consumer complaints filed with any state or federal consumer protection agency
    • disciplinary actions by a management consulting professional association.

Oral Exam Requirement

  • Candidates must be interviewed by three senior Certified Management Consultants to verify their technical competence and currency in their area of specialization as well as their understanding of the management consulting process.

The Certified Management Consultant - Basic credential has the following recertification information:

  • The CMC is renewed every 3 years; the agency sets specific due dates for fees and form submission. The Institute of Management Consultants uses a point system to determine if the renewal is awarded. A total of 30 points must be earned; the points are divided in to categories– Education, Experience, Professional Outreach, and Professional Conduct and points must be earned in each category.
