Federal Occupation Description

This series covers all positions the primary duties of which are to perform office automation work that includes word processing, either solely or in combination with clerical work, when such work is performed in the context of general office clerical support. Also included are positions that supervise work characteristic of this series when the knowledge, skills, and abilities for general office automation support work are essential requirements of the supervisory position. Positions in this series require: (1) knowledge of general office automation software, practices, and procedures; (2) competitive level proficiency in typing; and (3) ability to apply these knowledge and skills in the performance of general office support work.

The International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP), Certified Administrative Professional (CAP) credential is recommended for mid-career level office management and business administrative professionals. Administrative professionals should have basic knowledge of office systems, technology, office administration, and management, and know how to apply the principles of human relations and communications. Candidates must take an pass a written examination based on knowledge acquired by the office professional through education and reading. Candidates must have 4 years of experience of which advanced education may be used in place of some experience.

The Institute of Certified Records Managers (ICRM), Certified Records Manager (CRM) certification requires candidates to meet both educational and work experience certification requirements. A minimum of one year of professional records and information management (RIM) work experience is required, regardless of the level of education a candidate possesses. The minimum acceptable education is graduation from high school (completion of 12 grades) or equivalent (e.g., GED credential or equivalency diploma) in conjunction with five years of professional level RIM experience. The preferred qualifications are a college degree (four-year or bachelor’s degree) and one year of professional RIM experience. CRM candidates must pass a six-part written examination.

In-Plant Printing and Mailing Association (IPMA), Certified Mail Manager (CMM) is for managers who have attained a high level of competence and professionalism. Candidates must have a minimum of five years of mail management experience and be currently employed in an in-plant environment. Candidates must also be able to demonstrate, through three letters of recommendation, acceptable character, ability and reputation. Candidates must pass a written exam.

Certified CIW Web Foundations Associates have validated their understanding of important technologies that affect virtually every business. This certification is ideal for all professionals who use the Internet on the job. To become a CIW Web Foundations Associate, the candidate must pass the CIW Web Foundations exam, and complete the CIW Certification Agreement. Training courses are offered but not required.

A Certified Technology Specialist (CTS) performs general technology solution tasks by creating, operating and servicing network-based AV solutions, while conducting AV management activities which provide for the best audiovisual resolutions of the client's needs, both on time and within budget. Applicants must demonstrate audiovisual knowledge and/or skills, and must agree to the terms and conditions as noted in the CTS Application, which includes agreement to the CTS Code of Ethics & Conduct. Applicants must also pass an examination.

The Project Management Institute (PMI), Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) is an entry-level certification for project practitioners. Designed for those with less project experience, the CAPM demonstrates an understanding of the fundamental knowledge, terminology and processes of effective project management. The written exam covers project management areas such as initiation, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, closing, and professional and social responsibility. Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent and at least 1500 hours professional experience on a project team or 23 hours of project management education.

The International Computer Driving License (ICDL) is a basic skill level certification program that validates an individual's basic computer skills training. The ICDL is composed of modules covering computer topics. The modules are vendor neutral, i.e., not linked to a particular software firm. Candidates may select any combination of modules to create a custom program. There are no education or experience requirements and training is not mandatory.

The IC3 Digital Literacy Certification (IC3) is an entry level certification for candidates to demonstrate general computing and internet skills. The exam covers a variety of commonly used software products and Internet protocols and is ideal for beginners. The certification is relevant to any occupation requiring a general knowledge of how computers function and an ability to use word processing, spreadsheet and internet applications. There are no experience or education requirements that must be met prior to taking the IC3 exams. The IC3 Global Standard 4 (GS4) exams apply to Windows 7 and Office 2010, while the IC3 Global Standard 5 (GS5) exams apply to Windows 10 and Office 2016. Candidates must pass the three exams for either GS4 or GS5 to be certified.

A Certified Technology Specialist- Design (CTS-D) is an AV systems designer who assesses client's needs, designs AV systems and prepares AV design documents, by coordinating and collaborating with other professionals to create AV systems that satisfy clients' requirements. Applicants must hold current certification as a general CTS; must have signature agreement to the terms and conditions including the CTS Code of Ethics and Conduct; must be in good standing with the Certification Committee; and must provide documentation verifying a minimum of two years audiovisual industry experience in audiovisual design. Applicants must also pass an examination.

The Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) certification is an entry-level certification designed to help individuals take the first step toward a career as an IT professional or developer. Students, those changing careers or just starting, or those exploring a technology career are best suited towards earning an MTA certification. The next step in the Microsoft certification path is Microsoft Technology Specialist (MCTS), which requires hands-on experience with the Microsoft technology platform. There are a number of MTA exams available in the area of IT infrastructure, database or developer. Passing one exam earns the MTA certification.

Note that individuals who already have an in-depth understanding of and hands-on experience with Microsoft technologies, might want to start with a Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) certification or one of the Professional Series tracks. Please review the VA website to check which Microsoft exams in this certification track are eligible for GI Bill reimbursement.

The NCCA Certified Computer Skills Specialist credential is recommended for computer technicians who work in health care provider offices. Typical duties performed by Certified Computer Skills Specialists include administrative tasks, creating documents, editing documents, data entry, processing word documents, making newsletters, presentations and promotional material, record keeping, publishing new requested documents, managing contacts and other tasks. Applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or its equivalent, and completed a training program or have an approved amount of experience. The Adobe Certified Expert: Adobe Dreamweaver CC 2015 certification focuses on both key and new features of Dreamweaver CC. Typical candidates have 2+ years’ experience working with Dreamweaver on web projects and collaborating as a web designer/developer. Candidates have responsibility for architecting a site, designing page layouts, coding pages, and styling page elements with CSS. Candidates are familiar working with JavaScript behaviors and have the ability to publish sites via FTP transfers and are knowledgeable of web standards. Candidates can create and deploy pages that display in modern browsers across all screens and devices.

There are no experience requirements for this certification but Microsoft Learning recommends that a candidate have hands-on experience with the product prior to testing.
