The International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP), Certified Administrative Professional (CAP) credential is recommended for mid-career level office management and business administrative professionals. Administrative professionals should have basic knowledge of office systems, technology, office administration, and management, and know how to apply the principles of human relations and communications. Candidates must take an pass a written examination based on knowledge acquired by the office professional through education and reading. Candidates must have 4 years of experience of which advanced education may be used in place of some experience.

Education and/or Experience REQUIREMENTS
A baccalaureate degree and two years administrative experience.
Option 2:An associate's degree and three years administrative experience.
Option 3:No degree and four years administrative experience.
Note: Administrative experience of at least 20 hours per week is also considered. Each segment of experience must be at least 2 months continuous. If using a college degree to lessen the required experience, the degree must be in a business-related field.
Other REQUIREMENTS
The Certified Administrative Professional (CAP) credential has the following other requirements:
- All experience submitted must be within the past 10 years.
- Total experience submitted must include at least 12 months continuous with one employer in the past five years.
- Candidates must adhere to the IAAP Code of Conduct.

Additional considerations for the Certified Administrative Professional (CAP) include:
- IAAP Leadership Academy is optional. Completion of the program will reduce the required administrative experience by one year.
- The IAAP Organizational Management (OM) certification may be earned in addition to the CAP certification. The OM exam focuses on increasing the knowledge, skills, and abilities in the administrative profession. Candidates must be IAAP CAP certified in order to hold the OM specialty.
- The IAAP Technology Applications (TA) is a specialty that may be earned in addition to the CAP certification. The IAAP TA may be earned by having a combination of education through IAAP and achieving a Microsoft Certification. Once the candidate has earned a Microsoft Office Specialty (MOS) certification in at least one area, the TA exam be attempted. The education component begins by completing three different Microsoft Specific Optional Technology Modules. Candidate must be CAP certified in order to hold the TA Specialty.
