This series includes positions which supervise, lead, or perform emergency management work including managing, and coordinating with other entities, the prevention of, protection from, preparedness for, response to, recovery from and/or mitigation of intentional and/or unintentional crises, disasters, other humanitarian emergencies, hazards, or natural and man-made/technological (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, high-yield explosives) incidents. The work requires knowledge of emergency management and related directives, policies, regulations, procedures, and methods; and the collaboration and fostering of relationships between Federal, State, Tribal, and local governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and the private sector, and their response mechanisms and authorities.

The Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP) is an intermediate-level credential for professionals who support workplace safety practices. Candidates are required to have professional experience that includes safety responsibilities. CSPs conduct worksite assessments, determine risk, measure hazards and controls, evaluate risk and hazard control measures, investigate incidents, maintain incident and loss records, and prepare emergency response plans. Candidates are required to hold a bachelor's degree in any field. CSP candidates must meet experiential requirements that relate to the field of workplace safety. Candidates must pass a written exam.

The Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM), Certified Hazardous Material Manager (CHMM) is an intermediate-level credential for professionals who manage hazardous material programs and projects. CHMMs are expected to have knowledge and experience of hazardous materials identification and handling in compliance with applicable laws and regulations, planning and preparing for and responding to hazmat emergencies and incidents, sampling and analysis (of air, water, soil, waste) for potential contaminants, and site investigation and remediation. Candidates for the CHMM are required to hold a baccalaureate degree (or higher) from an accredited college or university preferably with a major in hazardous materials management or a related field and have a minimum of four years of relevant experience in the field of hazardous materials management or a related field. Candidates must pass a written examination.

The United States Department of Transportation (FMCSA), Hazardous Material Endorsement (H) is a credential that may be obtained by individuals who are commercial driver's license (CDL) holders. The Hazardous Material Endorsement (H) permits the professional truck driver to transport hazardous materials (HAZMAT); the endorsement is required to legally transport hazardous material. To earn the Hazardous Material Endorsement (H), candidates are required to be CDL holders, be a U.S. citizen or able to provide proof of legal status in the United States, be of legal age to operate a HAZMAT vehicle, willing to complete the TSA background check and to pass this check plus additional background checks. Candidates must complete a medical screening and pass the written exam.

The International Association of Emergency Association (iAEM), Associate Emergency Manager (AEM) certification is an intermediate-level credential recommended for emergency management professionals with comprehensive responsibility. AEM candidates must integrate stakeholders in all phases of emergency activity for all types of disasters. Professionals considering this credential must possess expertise in all four phases of disaster activity: mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery regardless of its nature-that is attack, man-made, and natural in a federal-state-local operating partnership. AEM candidates must pass a written exam, meet the requirements of both the emergency management and general management-training, and submit an essay as part of the application process.

The International Association of Emergency Managers (iAEM), Certified Emergency Manager (CEM) certification is for emergency management professionals to effectively manage a comprehensive emergency management program. These practitioners integrate stakeholders in all phases of emergency activity for all types of disasters. Professionals considering this credential must possess expertise in all four phases of disaster activity: mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery regardless of its nature-that is attack, man-made, and natural in a federal-state-local operating partnership. CEM candidates must meet all the requirements of the Associate Emergency Manager (AEM) plus additional requirements. Additional requirements include three years of emergency management experience, achievement of a four-year baccalaureate degree, and demonstrate contributions to the profession. CEM candidates must pass an exam, submit evidence of meeting the emergency management and general management-training requirement, and submit a management essay.

The Board of Certification Safety Professionals (BCSP), Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technologist (OHST) candidate performs occupational health and safety activities on a part-time or full-time basis.  The candidate's job duties will include worksite assessments to determine risks, potential hazards and controls, evaluating incident and loss records, and prepparing emergency response plans.  OHST candidate must work a minimum of three years in occupational hygiene or safety at least 35% of the time, have duties that require technical skills and knowledge in occupational hygiene and safety.  Candidate must pass a written exam.

The CHCM (Certified Hazard Control Manager) applies managerial techniques to eliminate or control unsafe and unhealthy conditions. It also deals with behaviors and other factors detrimental to people and property. The philosophy behind the CHCM is that safety and health administrators must understand and apply management principles in order to effectively manage hazard control programs. The CHCM is available at three levels: Associate, Senior and Master. A minimum of three years of experience is required at the Associate level.

The Fire Department Safety Officers Association (FDSOA) Health and Safety Officer (HSO) is an entry-level certification designed for individuals sponsored by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) or an Emergency Service Organization and individuals meeting the administrative duties and requirements of a Health and Safety Officer. Candidates must meet the NFPA current standards and supply confirmation from the fire department's chief that they meet the standards.

Renewal Period: 3 years

SARTECH II level of certification is the intermediate level for SAR personnel. This level is recommended for any person who functions on SAR missions as field searchers. The NASAR course that prepares the candidate to challenge the SARTECH II is Fundamentals of Search and Rescue (FUNSAR). Candidates are encouraged to always use the latest version of the FUNSAR text since it is updated regularly. There are no prerequisites required for a person to challenge the SARTECH II examination. The SARTECH II examination consists of written exam and a practical exam.

SARTECH I /Crewleader is a mid-level certification and the advanced level for SAR personnel. The level is recommended only for persons who function on SAR missions as field searchers and who may function as Crew Leader. Persons who obtain this certification are to function within the limits of the certification described in the NASAR Certification Criteria for SARTECH I/CREWLEADER. The NASAR course that prepares one to challenge the SARTECH I/CREWLEADER examination is Advanced Search and Rescue.

SARTECH III level of certification is the beginning level for SAR personnel. This level is recommended for any person who responds to and functions on SAR missions. Persons who obtain this certification are to function within the limits of the certification described in the NASAR standards for SARTECH III. The NASAR course that teaches the knowledge to challenge the SARTECH III is Introduction to Search and Rescue (ISAR). Candidates must pass a series of written and practical examinations that test the levels of knowledge and practical skills of SAR personnel.

As a Certified Hazardous Materials Practitioner (CHMP) your job encompasses more than just environmental protection, waste management, dangerous goods transportation, safety, or materials handling. Candidates must have at least 5 years of relevant experience with responsibilities directly related to the handling of hazardous materials and/or waste in the workplace; or, an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree from an accredited college or university in hazardous materials management, environmental science, environmental management, or environmental technology, plus 3 years of relevant experience as described above. Candidates must pass a written exam.

The Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), Associate Safety Professional certification (ASP) validates an individual's knowledge and experience in the safety profession. ASP certifies an individual's ability to perform at least 50% of professional-level safety duties in safety, health, environment and ergonomics. Safety professionals are required to make worksite assessments to determine risks, potential hazards and controls, evaluate risks and hazard control measures for equipment, systems, facilities and processes, investigate incidents, maintain and evaluate incident and loss records, and prepare emergency response plans. ASP candidates are required to have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in any field or an associate's in safety, health, or the environment, or a closely related field. In addition, candidates must have one year of professional safety experience where safety is at least 50%, preventative, professional level with breadth and depth of safety duties. Candidates must take a written exam.

IHMM's Certified Dangerous Good Professional (CDGP) certification recognizes one's expertise for dealing with the safe and secure transportation of dangerous goods internationally under the modal regulations published by the United Nations. Applicants must have five years of relevant experience to sit for the written examination.

The International Board for Certification of Safety Managers (IBFCSM), Certified Emergency Disaster Professional (CEDP) certification is for individuals working in any position related to emergency management and disaster response. Candidates can qualify for the CEDP certification on a professional or an associate level. Professional level candidates must have eight (8) years of education and experience combined with at least three (3) years of relevant experience; or the candidate must hold a Bachelor's or Graduate degree in a safety or related discipline and provide documentation for at least two (2) years of relevant experience. Associate level candidates must document four years of education and experience combined with at least one year of relevant experience. Candidates are required to take and pass a written examination.

The Joint Commission Resources (JCR), Certified Joint Commission Professional (CJCP) certification is for individuals working domestically within the U.S. and working within a hospital, hospital-based organization, or hospital system. CJCPs possess knowledge in accreditation compliance, survey readiness, and performance improvement. To earn the CJCP, candidates must meet education and employment requirements. Candidates must also pass a written exam.

The Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), Safety Management Specialists (SMS) certification provides candidates management skills required for a business's safe operation. The SMS candidate's job duties include defining and utilizing an organization's safety management systems; risk management; incident investigation and emergency preparedness; maintaining current knowledge of safety, health and environmental (SH&E) concepts; and identifying the business case for safety. Candidates must meet the minimum work qualifications of either part-time or full-time in an occupational health or safety (at least 35% of the job tasks related to management of safety related programs, processes, procedures, and/or personnel). Candidate's must have at least ten years of experience in occupational health or safety, and pass a written exam.
