As a Certified Hazardous Materials Practitioner (CHMP) your job encompasses more than just environmental protection, waste management, dangerous goods transportation, safety, or materials handling. Candidates must have at least 5 years of relevant experience with responsibilities directly related to the handling of hazardous materials and/or waste in the workplace; or, an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree from an accredited college or university in hazardous materials management, environmental science, environmental management, or environmental technology, plus 3 years of relevant experience as described above. Candidates must pass a written exam.

Education and/or Experience REQUIREMENTS
Candidates must have at least 5 years of relevant experience with responsibilities directly related to the handling of hazardous materials and/or waste in the workplace. For details go to the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management web site.
Option 2:Candidates must have an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree from an accredited college or university in hazardous materials management, environmental science, environmental management, or environmental technology, plus 3 years of relevant experience. A copy of the transcript or diploma must be submitted.
Other REQUIREMENTS
The Certified Hazardous Materials Practitioner (CHMP) credential has the following other requirements:
- Candidates must submit two endorsement forms.

- Identification, Handling, Shipment of Hazardous Materials in Compliance with Applicable U.S. Federal Laws & Regulations (40%)
- Management of Emergencies & Incidents (E&I) (10%)
- Sampling Analysis of Hazardous Materials/Waste (15%)
- Site Investigation and Remediation (15%)
- Program and Project Management (20%)
