The International Association of Emergency Association (iAEM), Associate Emergency Manager (AEM) certification is an intermediate-level credential recommended for emergency management professionals with comprehensive responsibility. AEM candidates must integrate stakeholders in all phases of emergency activity for all types of disasters. Professionals considering this credential must possess expertise in all four phases of disaster activity: mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery regardless of its nature-that is attack, man-made, and natural in a federal-state-local operating partnership. AEM candidates must pass a written exam, meet the requirements of both the emergency management and general management-training, and submit an essay as part of the application process.

Training REQUIREMENTS
Candidates must provide emergency management training and proof thereof; this training is required to have occurred within the last 10 years and meet the following additional criteria:
- 200 contact hours total of which–
- 100 hours are in emergency management, and
- 100 hours are in general management.

Other REQUIREMENTS
The Associate Emergency Manager (AEM) credential has the following other requirements:
- Candidates are required to submit a credential binder for review by the CEM Commission.
- Candidates must submit one letter of reference; this letter must be signed and printed on letterhead from a current supervisor. Candidates have the option to include two additional reference letters if the additional letters of reference are helpful to the application review process.
- Candidates are required to submit contact information for three references, including one from the candidate's current supervisor.
- Candidates must demonstrate knowledge, skills and abilities through a required essay, as specified in the instructions included in the application booklet.
