This standard is used to grade all nonsupervisory jobs involved in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of combustion-powered automotive vehicles, over-the-road trucks, and comparable vehicles, such as passenger cars, pickup trucks, buses, semitrailer truck tractors, warehouse tractors, farm tractors, forklifts, motorcycles, light combat vehicles such as jeeps and trucks, and other vehicles with similar characteristics, including their gasoline and diesel engines and other mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronically controlled systems.

The School Bus Technician certification is designed to identify and recognize those technicians who possess the knowledge and skills necessary to diagnose, service, and repair different subsystems of Type A, B, C and D school buses. The ASE School Bus Technician Test Series includes seven certification exams: Body Systems and Special Equipment (S1), Diesel Engines (S2), Drive Train (S3), Brakes (S4), Suspension and Steering (S5), Electrical/Electronic Systems (S6), and Air Conditioning Systems and Controls (S7). While several of these tests parallel existing ASE Medium/Heavy Truck tests, each one is designed to test knowledge of systems that are specific to school buses.

The Certified Master Automobile Technicians certification is designed to identify and recognize those automobile and light truck technicians who can demonstrate knowledge of the skills necessary to diagnose, service, and repair cars, SUV#s and light duty trucks. The ASE Automobile/Light Truck Test Series includes eight certification exams: Engine Repair, Automatic Transmission/Transaxle, Manual Drive Train and Axles, Suspension and Steering, Brakes, Electrical/Electronic Systems, Heating and Air Conditioning, and Engine Performance. To become ASE certified, technicians must pass one or more of the Automobile exams and present proof of at least two years of relevant work experience. Those who pass all eight exams are recognized as ASE-certified Master Automobile Technicians. Technicians may substitute two years of relevant formal training for up to one year of the work experience requirement.

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), Electronic Diesel Engine Diagnosis Specialist (L2) certification is for technicians who possess knowledge of the skills necessary to diagnose sophisticated diesel engine performance problems on medium- and heavy-duty trucks. To earn the Electronic Diesel Engine Diagnosis Specialist (L2) certification, candidates must have passed one of the ASE Diesel Engine tests (A9, H2, S2, or T2) and one of the ASE Electrical/Electronic Systems tests (A6, H6, S6 or T6), have three years of relevant work experience, and pass a written exam.
