The Certified Energy Manager (CEM) credential recognizes professionals in the energy management field who have demonstrated high levels of experience, competence, proficiency, and ethical fitness in the energy management profession. Candidates must meet one of the specified education and or experience requirements to sit for the exam. All CEM candidates must attend a preparatory CEM training seminar, and complete and pass a four-hour written, open-book examination.

Education and/or Experience REQUIREMENTS
Candidate must have a Four-Year Engineering or Architecture degree or Professional Engineer (P.E.) or Registered Architect (R.A.) with at least three years of experience in energy engineering/management.
Option 2:Candidate must have a Four-Year Technology, Environmental Science, Physics, or Earth Science degree with at least four years of experience in energy engineering/management.
Option 3:Candidate must have a Four-Year Business or related degree with at least five years of experience in energy engineering/management.
Option 4:Candidate must have a Two-Year Energy Management Associate’s degree with at least six years of experience in energy engineering/management.
Option 5:Candidate must have a Two-Year Technical degree with at least eight years of experience in energy engineering/management.
Option 6:Candidate must have ten years or more verified experience in energy engineering/management.
Acceptable experience is full-time direct energy management work. Higher education, part-time internships, and research positions are not acceptable.
Training REQUIREMENTS
All CEM candidates must attend a preparatory CEM training seminar conducted by an approved training provider. AEE does not provide training; instead it has approved training providers.
