Federal Occupation Description

This series covers positions involving performance or supervision of data processing support and services functions for users of digital computer systems including such work as: receiving, maintaining, and issuing data storage media for computer operations; collecting and sequentially staging input media with associated program instructions for processing; scheduling the use of computer time for program processing; collecting, maintaining and distributing program and systems documentation; and collecting raw information, preparing flow charts, and coding in program languages; or other support functions. This work requires knowledge of external data processing sequences, controls, procedures, or user and programming languages, rather than in-depth knowledge of computer requirements or techniques associated with development and design of data processing systems.

The Electronics Technicians Association, International (ETA-I), Computer Service Technician (CST) is an entry-level credential for professionals who supply computer support. The CST exam assesses candidates’ skills in performing hardware servicing and system software skills for personal computers (PCs). CST candidates should have knowledge of PC components, operating systems, basic networking, troubleshooting, and safety procedures. Candidates must pass a written exam.

The Electronics Technicians Association, International (ETA-I), Network Systems Technician (NST) certification is for a network professional who has knowledge of computer network basic concepts, which are applicable to all the various specialty areas of the computer industry. The NST must be familiar with the following knowledge areas: Computer Network Terminology, Network Administration, Wide Area Networks and Devices Used to Extend Networks, Network Architectures, Computer Network Topologies and Classifications, Network Services, Network Operations, Network Standards, Troubleshooting LAN/WAN Test Equipment, Network Server and Workstation Computer System Hardware, Network Operating Systems, and Disaster and Security Planning for Networks. Candidates must pass a written exam.

The Electronics Technicians Association, International (ETA-1), Certified Network Computer Technician (NCT) should have knowledge of computer electronics basic concepts, Internet and networking technology applicable to various areas of the computer industry. More specifically, NCT candidates must be able to function, structure, operate, file manage, install, configure/upgrade, manage memory, diagnose and troubleshoot operating systems and hardware (including motherboard and processors and printers). Candidates must pass a written exam.

Renewal Period: Lifetime

The Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) certification is an entry-level certification designed to help individuals take the first step toward a career as an IT professional or developer. Students, those changing careers or just starting, or those exploring a technology career are best suited towards earning an MTA certification. The next step in the Microsoft certification path is Microsoft Technology Specialist (MCTS), which requires hands-on experience with the Microsoft technology platform. There are a number of MTA exams available in the area of IT infrastructure, database or developer. Passing one exam earns the MTA certification.

Note that individuals who already have an in-depth understanding of and hands-on experience with Microsoft technologies, might want to start with a Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) certification or one of the Professional Series tracks. Please review the VA website to check which Microsoft exams in this certification track are eligible for GI Bill reimbursement.
