The Electronics Technicians Association, International (ETA-I), Computer Service Technician (CST) is an entry-level credential for professionals who supply computer support. The CST exam assesses candidates’ skills in performing hardware servicing and system software skills for personal computers (PCs). CST candidates should have knowledge of PC components, operating systems, basic networking, troubleshooting, and safety procedures. Candidates must pass a written exam.

ETA-I recommends that candidates hold the ETA-I Associate CET (CETa) or equivalent as a prerequisite for the CST certification.

RECERTIFICATION

Computer Service Technician (CST)

Renewal Period: 4 years

The Computer Service Technician (CST) credential has the following recertification information:

  • The Computer Service Technician (CST) is renewable every four years. Applicant will be required to obtain continuing education credits totaling ten hours per year for a total of 40 hrs over the term of the certification or will provide employer verification that they continue to work in an applicable field. That combined with the updating of contact information will constitute renewal for the CST.

    Detailed information related to the recertification process, associated fees and forms can be obtained from the Additional Certification Renewal/Maintenance Information on the certifying agency’s website.

    Note: If the four year term for the CST is exceeded without renewal by certification maintenance, and the certification expires, then the applicant will be required to retake the current version of the examination and will then again be eligible for the certification maintenance.

Additional considerations for the Computer Service Technician (CST) include:

  • In addition to the Certified Computer Service Technician (CST) certification, candidates might also consider the more advanced Certified Computer Service Technician (CST) journeyman-level Certified Electronics Technician certification. To attain journeyman level certification, candidates must have at least two years of experience and pass both the Associate level (CETa) exam plus the Certified Computer Service Technician (CST) certification. The applicant must score at least 75% on both the Associate and the Journeyman exams to pass. For more information go to the Electronics Technician Association, International (ETA-I) web site.
  • Candidates who hold a valid CompTIA A+ certification, may be eligible for a rollover to an ETA CST certification. See the ETA-I website for additional details.
