The Vibration Institute, Certified Vibration Analyst - Category I is an entry-level credential for professionals who specialize in machine and equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and engineering. Vibration Analysts certified at the first level perform a range of single channel machinery vibration condition monitoring and diagnostic activities. This activity may include acquiring data on predetermined routes, testing machinery for predefined procedures, and reading comparisons alert settings. Applicants for the Category I Certified Vibration Analyst certification must meet training and experience requirements and are also required to pass an exam.

The Vibration Institute recommends that applicants have a secondary school education.

Applicants for the Certified Vibration Analyst - Category I must provide evidence of at least 6 months of experience in the field of machinery condition monitoring, diagnostics, and electrical and mechanical technologies.

Applicants for the Certified Vibration Analyst - Category I must provide evidence of meeting the Vibration Institute training criteria as follows:

  • Provided by a training body that conforms to the requirements of ISO 18436-3
  • Based on the Body of Knowledge for each category (these are vibration principles, data acquisition, signal processing, condition monitoring, fault analysis, corrective action, equipment knowledge, and acceptance testing)
  • Included formal lectures, demonstrations, trainer-specified practical exercises, and/or distance controlled self-study
  • Met or exceeded 30 hours.

RECERTIFICATION

Certified Vibration Analyst - Category I

Renewal Period: 5 years

The Certified Vibration Analyst - Category I credential has the following recertification information:

  • Certification as a Vibration Analyst - Category I  is valid for five (5) years from the date of current certification level. After five years, certified Vibration Analysts are required to recertify. Recertification requires earning 23 CEUs or taking the associated Vibration Analyst exam.

Additional considerations for the Certified Vibration Analyst - Category I include:

  • Applicants may skip the Vibration Institute Category I examination, certification, and formal training requirement for Category I only, and apply directly for Category II if applicants meet any one of the following criteria:
    • Hold any 4-year degree from a college or university;
    • Hold any 2-year technical degree from a college or university;
    • Have 3 or more years of experience in vibration analysis; or,
    • Hold an active vibration analyst recognition (certificate) at any Category from any reputable training organization.
