The Mechanical Certified Drafter certification is part of an examination system which the American Design Drafting Association (ADDA) developed to establish a credentialing system based on an individual's competency level. It is recommended that the applicant completes two years on-the-job training or 800 - 1200 Contact Hours of Practical Discipline Specific Education.

The Mechanical Certified Drafter credential has the following recertification information:
- The Mechanical Certified Drafter certification is good for three years. To renew the certification, the recipient must be employed two out of the three years in the profession and have 30 contact hours of additional related training.
