The Early Adolescence through Young Adulthood/World Languages certification is appropriate for teachers who teach Spanish or French to students ages 11-18+ and whose functional ability in the language they teach is at an advanced level. Candidates must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, have a minimum of three years of teaching experience at the early childhood, elementary, middle school, or high school level, and where it is required, hold a state teaching license. In addition to the National Board candidate eligibility prerequisites, World Languages candidates must meet the National Board World Languages Standards for language proficiency by providing official American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) certified ratings of Advanced Low or higher from two ACTFL assessments: the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and the Writing Proficiency Test (WPT). Candidates must pass a computer-based assessment and submit three portfolio entries.

Credential Pre-requisite REQUIREMENTS
Candidates must possess a valid state teaching or counseling license. Exception: If the candidate is teaching where a license is not required, he/she must have taught in schools recognized and approved to operate by the state.
Education and/or Experience REQUIREMENTS
Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
Candidates must have a minimum of three years teaching experience at the early childhood, elementary, middle school, or high school level.

In addition to the National Board candidate eligibility prerequisites, World Languages candidates must meet the National Board World Languages Standards for language proficiency by providing official American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) certified ratings of Advanced Low or higher from two ACTFL assessments: the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and the Writing Proficiency Test (WPT).
Candidates must:
- Obtain both ACTFL certifications no more than two years prior to the registration deadline of your initial year of candidacy (the year in which you complete your first component).
- Submit proof of having completed both ACTFL certifications no later than June 30 of the cycle year in which you complete initial testing on all four National Board components (no later than your third year of candidacy).
- Receive a rating of Advanced Low or higher on each ACTFL certification.

Constructed Response: Knowledge of Language Acquisition
- In this exercise, candidates will draw on their knowledge of the theories and processes of language acquisition and your knowledge of child and adolescent development to analyze a work sample from a student at a specified level of French language learning.

Constructed Response: Culture
- In this exercise, candidates will use their deep understanding of the cultures of the French-speaking world and their experience to analyze a specific cultural topic and its significance in the French-speaking world.

Constructed Response: Knowledge of Language
- In this exercise, candidates will use their deep understanding of curriculum, instruction, and cultures to explain how they would incorporate a specific French instructional resource into a collaborative weeklong unit with a teacher from another discipline at their school.
Performance Exam Requirements
In addition to the computer-based assessment, candidates for National Board Certification are required to complete three portfolio entries, which are submitted online.
The topics for the portfolio entries are as follows:
- Differentiation Instruction
- This classroom-based portfolio entry is primarily comprised of samples of student work and an accompanying written commentary.
- Teaching Practice and Learning Environment
- This is a classroom-based portfolio entry that requires video recordings of interactions between the candidate and his/her students.
- Effective and Reflective Practitioner
- This portfolio entry requires examples of assessments used for formative and summative purposes.
