Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP) is a credential for learning and performance professionals offered by the ATD Certification Institute. It is broad-based and addresses talent development professionals' knowledge and performance achievements in 10 Areas of Expertise (AOEs) as defined by the ATD 2013 Competency Model. CPLP is for professionals in the learning and performance field who have a minimum of five years of related work experience; ASTD does not have a minimum education requirement for CPLP applicants. Candidates must pass both a knowledge exam and a work product assessment. The work product must pertain to one of the following areas: Instructional Design, Training Delivery, Performance Improvement, and Managing Learning Programs.

Individuals applying for the program must have at least five (5) years of full time talent development work experience. For candidates with four (4) years of full time talent development work experience, one (1) year of relevant college/university study (at least nine credit hours of work) may be substituted for one (1) year of relevant work experience.

The Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP) credential has the following other requirements:

  • Individuals who have earned the CPLP credential and those who have applied to the program must affirm their endorsement of the ATD CI Code of Ethics agreement and acknowledge their commitment to uphold its principles, and agree to the policies and rules set forth in the CPLP Handbook.
  • Applicants submit a work product package which demonstrates competency in a specific area of expertise identified by CPLP. For details about the application process, see the CPLP Handbook.

Skill Test Skills Application Exam

  • Candidates are expected to critically review and analyze documents and make decisions regarding case study material. The exam consists of case studies that include the following:
    • an overview that establishes a job-related scenario
    • various documentation to support the scenario
    • questions that are linked to the scenario or supporting documentation.
  • All scenarios, supporting documentation, and questions are related to one of the following areas of expertise (AOE):
    • Instructional Design (ID)
    • Training Delivery (TD)
    • Managing Learning Programs (MLP)
