The National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET), Construction Materials Testing: Concrete - Level I is an entry-level credential for field and laboratory technician trainees who test and inspect construction concrete. The candidates for NICET certification at Level I in Construction Materials Testing – Concrete should have the knowledge, experience and basic skills needed to work in the industry. Under direct supervision, candidates should become familiar with sampling standards (for example, ASTM and AASHTO); follow sampling procedures; conduct various methods of concrete testing; gain a basic understanding of concrete properties; perform basic math calculations; read with basic comprehension skills, grasping construction and materials terminology; use safe practices such as wearing personal protective equipment; identify task-specific hazards; verify current calibration and equipment operation; verify that concrete materials are to specifications; support engineers by performing routine testing and work in vertical or horizontal construction. Candidates must meet experience requirements including, pass an exam and have a supervisor’s verification of satisfying experience requirements.

Candidates for the Construction Materials Testing: Concrete - Level I certification are required to have 6 months of relevant experience.

Candidates must have at least 3 months of full-time work experience in testing concrete mixes and components, within the 6 month requirement.

Candidates must have up to 3 months of full-time experience in some combination of soils, concrete and/or other related construction materials testing.

The Construction Materials Testing: Concrete - Level I credential has the following other requirements:

  • NICET requires that Construction Materials Testing: Asphalt certification candidates obtain their supervisor’s verification of all Subfields /Technical Areas used to meet the experience requirement.

  • Personal and Worksite Safety (5 - 15%)
    • Determine and wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
    • Identify and report task-specific hazards
  • Plans and Specifications (5 - 15%)
    • Identify locations on site from locations on plans
    • Identify test frequencies and requirements
  • Sampling of Concrete Mixes and Components (10 - 20%)
    • Collect samples of plastic concrete
    • Collect samples of mix components (including labeling)
    • Collect masonry units (e.g. block or brick)
    • Document source of samples (e.g. aggregates or plastic concrete)
    • Document placement location for plastic concrete
    • Document mix information
  • Concrete Mix Sample Preparation, Storage, and Transportation (5 - 15%)
    • Prepare samples for strength testing
    • Transport samples of plastic concrete to on-site testing location
    • Wet sieve plastic concrete
    • Site cure samples
    • Transport hardened concrete samples to the laboratory
    • Lab cure prepared specimens
    • Reduce samples to testing size
  • Field and Laboratory Testing of Concrete Mixes and Components (35 - 45%)
    • Determine temperature of plastic concrete
