The National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET), Construction Materials Testing: Asphalt - Level I is an entry-level credential for field and laboratory technician trainees who test and inspect construction asphalts. Candidates for the Construction Materials Testing: Asphalt – Level I have the knowledge, experience, and basic skills needed to work in the industry. Under direct supervision, candidates become familiar with sampling standards (for example, ASTM and AASHTO) for mix design and submittal; follow sampling procedures to obtain a sample; identify task-specific hazards; perform a variety of tests, such as field density, aggregate gradation, and asphalt content; perform basic math calculations; read with basic comprehension skills, grasping construction and materials terminology; reduce samples to testing size; use safe practices such as wearing personal protective equipment; use splitting equipment; and verify current calibration and equipment operation for tests. Candidates must pass an exam and obtain a supervisor’s verification of satisfying experience requirements.

Candidates must have 6 months of relevant experience.

Candidates must have at least 3 months of full-time work experience in testing asphalt mixes and components, within the 6 month requirement.

Up to 3 months may be in full-time experience in some combination of soils, concrete and/or other related construction materials testing.

The Construction Materials Testing: Asphalt - Level I credential has the following other requirements:

  • NICET requires that Construction Materials Testing: Asphalt certification candidates obtain their supervisor’s verification of all Subfields /Technical Areas used to meet the experience requirement.

Written Exam

  • Personal and Worksite Safety (3 - 7%)
    • Determine and wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
    • Identify and report task-specific hazards
  • Plans and Specifications (5 - 15%)
    • Identify locations on site from locations on plans (5-15%)
  • Sampling of Asphalt Mixes and Components (12 - 22%)
    • Document sampling locations
    • Follow sampling procedures to obtain samples
    • Compare sampled material to product submittals
    • Label sample origin and material
    • Deliver samples to the laboratory
  • Asphalt Mix Sample Preparation (8 - 18%)
    • Reduce/split samples to test size
    • Condition the samples for testing by temperature
    • Label the prepared samples
  • Field and Laboratory Testing of Asphalt Mixes and Components (35 - 45%)
    • Perform field density tests of compacted asphalt mixes
    • Perform aggregate gradation tests
    • Perform asphalt content tests of asphalt mixes (e.g., extraction, ignition, and nuclear methods)
    • Determine the moisture content of asphalt mixes
    • Determine the moisture content of aggregates
    • Perform the maximum theoretical specific gravity and density tests of asphalt mixes
    • Perform the bulk specific gravity tests of compacted asphalt mixes
    • Perform the fractured face tests of aggregates
  • Communication of Results (5 - 15%)
    • Collect required test data for reports
    • Document field observations
    • Complete test forms and related reports
    • Report results to supervisor
    • Assess reasonableness of results
  • Equipment Calibration and Maintenance (1 - 8%)
    • Verify current calibration for Level I tests
    • Verify equipment operation for Level I tests
