Federal Occupation Description

This series covers positions which supervise, lead, or perform work involving planning, conducting, or managing investigations related to alleged or suspected criminal violations of Federal laws. The work involves: recognizing, developing, and presenting evidence to reconstruct events, sequences, time elements, relationships, responsibilities, legal liabilities, and conflicts of interest; conducting investigations in a manner meeting legal and procedural requirements; and providing advice and assistance both in and out of court to the U.S. Attorney’s Office during investigations and prosecutions. Work in this series primarily requires knowledge of criminal investigative techniques, rules of criminal procedures, laws, and precedent court decisions concerning the admissibility of evidence, constitutional rights, search and seizure, and related issues in the conduct of investigations.

The ASIS International, Certified Protection Professional (CPP) certification is for security management professionals who demonstrate knowledge and competency in all areas of security management. CPP candidates must have been employed full-time in a security-related role and meet education and/or experience requirements, which include at least three years of experience in responsible charge of a security function. The National Association of Legal Investigators (NALI), Certified Legal Investigator (CLI) credential is an intermediate career-level certification recommended for legal investigators. Legal investigators assist attorneys by reviewing police reports and discovery materials, analyzing and photographing crime or accident scenes, interviewing parties and witnesses, obtaining signed or recorded statements, performing background investigations, preparing documentary and demonstrative evidence, recommending experts and testifying in court. Legal investigators must exhibit the highest standards of professional and ethical conduct. The Certified Legal Investigator (CLI) certification requires various exams. Candidates must devote the majority of their practice to negligence investigations for the plaintiff, and/or criminal defense, and be employed by either a law firm or an investigative firm. Candidates must be licensed, if required, by the state in which he/she is practicing or employed. They must also have a minimum of five years verifiable related work experience.

Renewal Period: 3 years

The Professional Certified Investigator (PCI) certification is designed for security professionals whose primary responsibilities are to conduct investigations and who have demonstrated in-depth operational knowledge and competence in this area. Candidates wishing to take the PCI examination must first satisfy the following requirements: Complete five years of investigations experience, with at least two (2) years in case management; and earn a high school diploma or GED equivalent. The applicant must not have been convicted of any criminal offense that would reflect negatively on the security profession, ASIS, and the PCI program. Successful Completion of an examination is required for all applicants who meet the experience and/or education and responsible charge criteria. Candidates must pass the examination to achieve the PCI designation.

A Certified Forensic Interviewer (CFI) is a professional with the expertise to conduct a variety of investigative interviews with victims, witnesses, suspects or other sources to determine the facts regarding suspicions, allegations or specific incidents in either public or private sector settings. The Certified Forensic Interviewer demonstrates understanding of legal aspects of interviewing and proficiency in interview preparation, behavioral analysis, accusatory and non-accusatory interviewing, documentation, and presentation of findings. CFI applicants must have a combination of education and experience. Applicants must have two to four years of experience in a public or private position where they are responsible for investigation, interviewing and interrogation. Applicants holding a bachelor's degree are required to have two years of such experience while those with a high school diploma must have four years of experience.

Renewal Period: 5 years

An internationally recognized accreditation program open to police officers, engineers, educators and private consultants both all working in the field of traffic accident investigation and reconstruction within the United States and Canada. Although participation in the accreditation program is voluntary, people who are properly trained and experienced in accident investigation and reconstruction can successfully complete the examination and achieve accreditation.

The CyberSecurity Forensic Analyst (CSFA) is an advanced level certification for individuals who have the ability to conduct a thorough forensic analysis using sound examination and handling procedures, and are able to communicate the results of their analysis effectively. The CSFA certification is designed for professionals who already possess practical experience in the field of digital forensics. A minimum of at least two years of experience with both the technical and administrative aspects of conducting forensic analysis is required. To become CSFA certified, applicants must pass a written and practical exam, and complete an FBI criminal background check.

The AACE International, Certified Forensic Claims Consultant (CFCC) certification is for experienced claims professionals and testifying experts working in the construction dispute resolution and litigation support arenas. CFCC candidates must have 12 years of claims relevant experience in dispute resolution and preparation and submission of claims, possess a four-year college degree, hold a current certification or license (obtained after education) from an approved list, submit an expert report that was submitted as evidence, a formal claim submittal or a professional paper accepted for publication, and provide four letters of recommendation. Candidates must also pass a written exam.
