Tower Crane Operator is an entry- level certification exam. Tower Crane operators work in various industries and can expect to be in remote to residential and commercial construction areas, along with dock side and maritime locations. Specific requirements to operate Tower cranes include; be at least 18 years of age, should meet physical requirements, and pass written and practical examinations. The certification program offered by NCCCO is for trained crane operators who are currently working in industries in the capacity of operators, maintenance staff, inspection staff, or training personnel. Candidates must meet the ASME B30.5 physical requirements all throughout the certification program.

Other REQUIREMENTS

The Tower Crane Operator credential has the following other requirements:

  • Candidate must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Certified crane operators must continue to meet ASME B30.3 physical requirements throughout their certification period and attest to their agreement to those requirement in their application. Means of compliance with ASME physical requirements include, but are not limited to the following:
    • CCO Physical Examination Form (valid for three (3) years)
    • A current DOT (Department of Transportation) Medical Examiner's Certificate (valid for two (2) years)

Written Exam

  • Domain 1: Site (10%)
  • Domain 2: Erection, Climbing and Dismantling (25%)
  • Domain 3: Operations (50%)
  • Domain 4: Technical Knowledge (15%)

Practical Exam

  • Pre-Operational (Shift) Inspection
  • Task 1: Place Load Hook and Chain in Stop Circle
  • Task 2: Place Test Weight in Load Circle
  • Task 3: Negotiate Zigzag Corridor With Load
  • Task 4: Safe Securing Procedures

RECERTIFICATION

Tower Crane Operator

Renewal Period: 5 years

The Tower Crane Operator credential has the following recertification information:

  • Must pass the Recertification Written Examination(s).
  • Candidates who can attest to at least 1,000 hours of crane-related experience during their period of certification do not need to take the Practical Exam to recertify.
  • Additional information regarding recertification can be found on the NCCCO website.
