The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), DOD/EPA Section 608 Technician Certification (Type I) is a requirement under EPA regulations 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F, under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act. This regulation requires that technicians who maintain, service, repair, or dispose of equipment that could release ODS refrigerants into the atmosphere must be certified. Technicians that service small appliances should be certified as a Type I Technician. Technicians are required to pass an EPA-approved exam to earn Section 608 Technician Certification. Exams must be administered by an EPA-approved certifying organization. There are no eligibility requirements to sit for the exam, but training is available through EPA-approved certifying organizations.

- EPA regulations (40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F) under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act require that technicians, defined as an individual who performs any of the following activities, must be certified:
- Attaching and detaching hoses and gauges to and from an appliance to measure pressure within the appliance.
- Adding refrigerant to or removing refrigerant from an appliance.
- Any other activity that violates the integrity of a motor vehicle air conditioner (MVAC)-like appliance or small appliance (other than disposal).
- Technicians must pass a written examination administered by an EPA-approved certifying organization. These organizations may also offer training which may be completed by the technician, but is not required for certification.
