The National Ground Water Association (NGWA), Certified Pump Installer (CPI) is an intermediate-level credential for groundwater technicians. CPIs are often contractors who coordinate not just the ground water pump installation at a site, but related efforts. CPIs are expected to meet experience requirements and to have knowledge of specialized equipment use, geologic formations, and pump troubleshooting skills. Candidates must take a written exam.

Experience REQUIREMENTS
Candidates are required to have at least 24 consecutive months of full-time pump installation experience.
Other REQUIREMENTS
The Certified Pump Installer (CPI) credential has the following other requirements:
- Candidates are required to be at least 20 years old.
- Candidates are required to submit an application packet that includes completing written references verifying the candidate’s work-related experience from two professional contacts who are not affiliated with the candidate’s current employer, an agreement form, and an affidavit for the current year.
Written Exam Water Systems General
To earn the CPI designation, applicants must pass the water systems general exam and at least one other specialized pump/water systems exam. The exam topics that appear here are for the "Water systems" exam.
