The National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET), Construction Materials Testing: Soil - Level IV is an advanced-level credential for field and laboratory technicians engaged specifically in the testing and inspection of construction soil. Candidates qualify for level four with 10 years of experience of which at least five years must include soil QA/QC experience. Candidates must have knowledge of construction material engineering properties used in buildings, roads, and related civil engineering projects and knowledge of testing specifications, standards, methods, and materials evaluation. Candidates must pass the written exam, submit a supervisor’s verification of the candidate’s experience, a write-up detailing the candidate’s work experience in completing a major project, plus a personal recommendation.

Candidates must have a minimum ten years of work experience with at least seven of which must include soils QA/QC experience involving a broad range of complexity and diversity.

The Construction Materials Testing: Soil - Level IV credential has the following other requirements:

  • NICET requires that Construction Materials Testing: Soil certification candidates obtain their supervisor’s verification of all work elements used to meet the exam requirement.
  • Additionally, the candidate must submit a Technician Personal Recommendation form completed on their behalf by a qualified industry member who is familiar with their technical capabilities and professional character.
  • Construction Materials Testing: Soil - Level IV certification candidates must submit a Major Project Write-up detailing his or her role in a relevant major project.

  • Construction Materials Testing: Soil - Level IV certification is valid for 3 years. Certification holders should keep a record of their professional development activities (using the free CPD log provided by NICET), both for their own career development uses and for NICET recertification.

Additional considerations for the Construction Materials Testing: Soil - Level IV include:

  • Candidates who have a current technician certification from the American Concrete Institute in select specialty areas may be exempted from meeting NICET written exam requirements for selected work elements.
