The Certified Energy Auditor (CEA) is an individual who evaluates and analyzes how energy is being used in a facility, identifies energy conservation opportunities and makes recommendations where consumption can be reduced or optimized. Candidates are required to acknowledge completion of a minimum of 2 hours of Safety Training within the last three years and participation in five commercial audits within the last three years. In addition, candidates must meet one of the specified education and/or experience requirements to sit for the exam. All CEM candidates must attend a preparatory CEM training seminar conducted by an approved training provider prior to sitting for the exam.

Education and/or Experience REQUIREMENTS
Candidate must have a Four-Year Engineering or Architecture degree or Professional Engineer (P.E.) or Registered Architect (R.A.) or active CEM with at least three years of experience in energy auditing and/or participating in a team doing energy assessments
Option 2:Candidate must have a Four-Year non-Engineering degree with at least four years of experience in energy auditing and/or participating in a team doing energy assessments.
Option 3:Candidate must have a Two-Year Technical degree with at least five years of experience in energy auditing and/or participating in a team doing energy assessments.
Option 4:Candidate must have ten years or more verified experience in energy auditing and/or participating in a team doing energy assessments.
Acceptable experience is full-time direct energy auditing work or participating in team energy assessments. Higher education, part-time internships, and research positions are not acceptable.
Training REQUIREMENTS
Candidates are required to acknowledge completion of a minimum of 2 hours of Safety Training within the last three years.
All CEA candidates must attend one of AEE's preparatory CEA training seminars conducted by an approved training provider. AEE does not provide training; instead it has approved training providers.
Other REQUIREMENTS
The Certified Energy Auditor (CEA) credential has the following other requirements:
- Candidates are required to acknowledge participation in five commercial audits within the last three years. Two of the audits are a minimum of 10,000 sq. ft. Also, the audits have been of at least two different building types.
