The American Welding Society (AWS), Certified Associate Welding Inspector (CAWI) is an entry-level credential for individuals who perform welding quality control and quality assurance activities. Individuals who earn the CAWI work in every industry that uses welding as a core process in the manufacture, construction, or fabrication of their products. Those holidng the CAWI perform welding inspections under the active supervision of Senior Certified Welding Inspectors (SCWI) and Certified Welding Inspectors (CWI). CAWI candidates must meet experiential requirements and pass an exam.

Education and/or Experience REQUIREMENTS
Candidates must have a combination of qualifying education and work experience with supporting documentation as follows:
- 2 years of post-high school education in a welding curriculum or engineering technology, engineering, or physical science and 6 months of experience;
- High school diploma or hold a state or military approved high school equivalency diploma (e.g. GED) and 2 years of relevant work experience;
- At least 8th grade education with a minimum of 1 year of vocational education and training in a welding curriculum and 3 years of relevant work experience;
- 8th grade education and a minimum of 4 years of relevant work experience; or
- Less than 8th grade education and a minimum of 6 years of relevant work experience.
Other REQUIREMENTS
The Certified Associate Welding Inspector (CAWI) credential has the following other requirements:
- Candidates must pass a vision test.
The AWS certification exam tests candidate's skills on factual knowledge of welding fundamentals, and the ability to use codes and standards. For this reason, AWS strongly recommends that candidates for certification attend an AWS Seminar first.
