The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), Building Commissioning Professional Certification (BCxP) is a professional certification. The BCxP credential allows candidates to demonstrate competency in leading, planning, coordinating and managing a commissioning team to implement commissioning processes in new and existing buildings. To obtain the BCxP certification, candidates must meet eligibility requirements and pass an exam.

Applicants must meet one of the following combinations of education and experience. For more details on these requirements, please refer to the BCxP candidate handbook.

Option 1:

High school diploma with 10 years' building industry experience, with 5 of those years in commissioning experience.

Option 2:

A two-year degree, non-building science bachelor's degree, or equivalent military training with 8 years' building industry experience, with 5 of those years in commissioning experience.

Option 3:

Bachelor's degree in building sciences or equivalent military training/experience with 5 years' commissioning experience.

Option 4:

Licensed architect or professional engineer with 3 years' commissioning experience.

The Building Commissioning Professional Certification (BCxP) credential has the following other requirements:

  • Applicants must have participated in three commissioning projects, and have participated in at least 6 of the following activities:
    1. Development of an OPR/CFR, 

    2. Develop commissioning plan,

    3. Review of a design,

    4. Perform field verification,

    5. Oversee performance testing,

    6. Correction of deficiencies,

    7. Training,

    8. Prepare commissioning report.

  • Applicants must agree to abide by ASHRAE's code of ethics, which can be found within the candidate handbook.

The Building Commissioning Professional Certification (BCxP) credential has the following recertification information:

Recertification occurs every three years. In order to recertify, certification holders must meet the following requirements:
  • Participated in one commissioning project.
  • Agree to uphold ASHRAE's code of ethics, which can be found in the candidate handbook.

  • Earned 50 professional development hours.
