The CertTEC Basic Composites certification is an entry-level credential designed for composite technicians. The exam tests the technician's skills and knowledge focused on composite history, fiber reinforcements, matrix systems, and processes related to basic composite fabrication, inspection, damage assessment and repair using methods common to the composite fabrication and repair industry. Applicants have different options to meet the eligibility requirements, active duty or veteran military personnel whose rating or assignment is/was in the composites field meet the eligibility requirement for Basic Composite certification.

Education/Training and/or Experience REQUIREMENTS

Option 1:

Applicant should have completed advance training in the composites discipline.

Option 2:

Applicant should have at least two years’ work experience in the composites field.

Option 3:

Applicant should be an active or veteran military personnel whose rating or assignment is or was in the aviation structure field.

Option 4:

Applicant should be a college or technical school graduate with two-year degree in discipline related to composites engineering or technology.

Performance Exam Requirements

Applicants will be required to demonstrate the ability to properly apply composites construction techniques using appropriate materials and tooling to produce composite components, perform material evaluation techniques and perform composite repairs as directed by a qualified CertTEC examiner. CertTEC oral and practical exams must be taken at testing sites. RECERTIFICATION

Basic Composites

Renewal Period: 3 years

The Basic Composites credential has the following recertification information:

  • The CertTEC certifications are valid for three years from issuance. To renew certification, the agency offers 3 options– the Work Verification Method, the Alternate Method that involves earning a minimum of 18 Alternate Recertification Credits (ARCs), or lastly the Equivalent Knowledge Exam Method. Additional recertification details can be obtained from CertTEC Recertification Policy.

Additional considerations for the Basic Composites include:

  • The CertTEC Basic Composites certification requires a specialized testing station to evaluate candidate's oral and practical skills. 

    To find the nearest Regional Testing Center, go to "Where would I test?”

    Please do not submit a request for this certification if you are not close to these testing stations.

Star

Star credentials are MOS enhancing, as designated by the Proponent. MOS enhancing credentials are directly related to an MOS or ASI, are taught either partially or completely as part of a Program of Instruction (POI), and improves the MOS technical proficiency.

The Skill Level reflects the level, based on MOS training and/or experience, the Soldier should be the most prepared to successfully earn the credential. See the Table Legend for details about each level.

Proponent Funded

Indicates the credential may have funding through the MOS proponent. Some proponents offer credentialing opportunities in conjunction with military training and/or as part of MOS development beyond the training base.

Navy Bucks

CG Bucks

Coming Soon - Coast Guard policy regarding service member eligibility requirements to participate in the Voluntary Credentialing Program is under review with a projected release date of first quarter FY20.

Moderate ease of attainment: minimum education requirement = Associate's and/or prerequisite and/or minimum experience = more than 2 years and less than 10 years of experience.

Additional years required for certain preliminary stages may not be included in this classification. For requirements measured in hours, 1080 hours was considered a year. Highly attainable: mimum education requirement = HS or less and/or minimum experience = 2 years or less experience and no additional requirements.
