Federal Occupation Description

This standard covers nonsupervisory work which involves receiving, storing, issuing, signing out, and checking in various tools, equipment, shop supplies, and repair parts to and from such using maintenance, construction, and shop personnel as machinists, carpenters, and automotive and aircraft mechanics. Such work requires knowledge of the kinds of tools, parts, and equipment in stock and how to locate them, and an ability to identify and issue specific items requested by using personnel.

Medium/Heavy Truck Parts Specialists possess knowledge about a wide range of component systems as well as communication, sales, and inventory management skills. To earn the Parts Specialist - Medium/Heavy Truck Parts Specialist (P1) certification, candidates must have two years of work experience specifically related to parts counter work and pass a written exam.

Automobile Parts Specialists possess knowledge about a wide range of vehicle component systems for all makes and models, as well as customer relations, sales, merchandising, vehicle identification, cataloging, and inventory management skills. To earn the Parts Specialist - Automobile Parts Specialist (P2) certification, candidates must have two years of work experience specifically related to parts counter work and pass a written exam.

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), Parts Specialist - General Motors Parts Consultant (P4) certification is for individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to work competently in a General Motors Dealership parts department. General Motors Parts Consultants possess very specific working knowledge of the GM parts, dealer parts and accessories policies and procedure manual and the 19 specific major parts groups. To earn the Parts Specialist - General Motors Parts Consultant (P4) certification, candidates must have two years of work experience specifically related to parts counter work and pass a written exam.
