Federal Occupation Description

This standard is used to grade all nonsupervisory jobs involved in applying coating materials (for example, paint, varnish, lacquer, shellac, epoxy resin, and teflon) on wood, metal, glass, synthetic, concrete, and other surfaces. This coating work is done with brushes, rollers, spray guns, and other related methods and techniques, and is performed on the insides and outsides of buildings, aircraft, vessels, mobile equipment, fittings, furnishings, machinery, and other surfaces.

Renewal Period: 5 years

A Concrete Flatwork Finisher & Technician certification is aimed at persons qualified to consolidate, finish, edge, joint, begin curing and provide initial protection for a concrete slab. ACI grants certification only to those applicants who obtain a passing grade on the written examination, and either possess 1500 hours of actual on-the-job finishing experience and successfully complete the ACI performance examination; or possess 4500 hours of actual on-the-job finishing experience. Finishing experience must include concrete placement, consolidation, jointing, curing and protection, finishing, form setting, prep work, rubbing, patching, and saw cutting. Verification of the candidate's work experience by the applicant's employer(s) is required.

A Specialty Commercial/Industrial Concrete Flatwork Finisher & Technician is an individual who has demonstrated a basic knowledge of finishing procedures for Specialty Commercial/Industrial Concrete Flatwork Finishing, including high tolerance floor construction, application of surface treatments, and silica fume concrete, and who has demonstrated skill in operating mechanized finishing equipment. Candidates must have prior or current certification as an ACI Concrete Flatwork Finisher, possess one year (2000 hours) of approved work experience, and pass the written and performance examinations.

A Commercial/Industrial Flatwork Specialist-High Tolerance is an individual who has demonstrated a basic knowledge of finishing procedures for Specialty Commercial/Industrial Concrete Flatwork Finishing, including high tolerance floor construction, application of surface treatments, silica fume concrete, and who has demonstrated skill in operating mechanized finishing equipment and in finishing high tolerance flatwork. Candidates must hold current certification as an ACI Specialty Commercial/Industrial Concrete Flatwork Finisher and successfully complete the performance examination for high tolerance flatwork.

A Commercial/Industrial Flatwork Specialist-Silica Flume is an individual who has demonstrated a basic knowledge of finishing procedures for Specialty Commercial/Industrial Concrete Flatwork Finishing, including high tolerance floor construction, application of surface treatments, silica flume concrete, and who has demonstrated skill in operating mechanized finishing equipment and in installing and finishing silica fume concrete. Candidates must hold current certification as an ACI Specialty Commercial/Industrial Concrete Flatwork Finisher and successfully complete the performance examination for silica fume concrete.

A Commercial/Industrial Flatwork Specialist-Surface Treatments is an individual who has demonstrated a basic knowledge of finishing procedures for Specialty Commercial/Industrial Concrete Flatwork Finishing, including high tolerance floor construction, application of surface treatments, silica fume concrete, and who has demonstrated skill in operating mechanized finishing equipment and in applying surface treatments in the process of finishing fresh concrete. Candidates must hold current certification as an ACI Specialty Commercial/Industrial Concrete Flatwork Finisher and successfully complete the performance examination for application of surface treatments.
